There were several incidents yesterday. Mansfield are trying to be the new Notts County for inciting our fans....I was with 1 female and 1 minor on our (3) own and was given verbals with the obvious intention of taking it further....I mean, really? Police yesterday had to deal with handbags on the penalty incident in the right hand corner, which was farcical.... and one really tough hard guy/gal threw a smoke bomb on the pitch! It's all a bit ridiculous, and the police policy appeared to join in with the farce. A police farce, if you like... Yea, it's sew. Sow can also be a noun to describe a female Pig, where the word is pronounced differently. I’m sure you know what I mean! It appears some of our our fans missed a trick yesterday with that pronunciation directed towards farcical authority.

Our fans were loud by sound of it on the highlights Same on the wireless. Was impressive, if not surprising I was listening to some strange Mansfield station that gave 5 mins of commentary followed by 10 mins of ads and music, then back to 5 mins of commentary It was free and on the interweb Is this sort of channel available for many matches?

Not sure that I quite fit the category that you want to explain this - I don't have a Barton flag or anything. To be clear, the violence does bother me, I know that these cases can be complicated and I'll wait for the legal verdict to come in. I guess you'd class me as a "Barton fan". When he first came to Rovers I heard from several players that, within a short space of time, it felt like a different club. There was so much positivity in the camp, Barton listened to the players with regards to things they were unhappy with, such as the medical treatment, and he took the bull by the horns and addressed it with those upstairs. When he was in a position to make changes to improve things, he did so. The players were clear about what he expected from them on the pitch, there were some players who weren't up to it, which was frustrating to those who were, once again, he dealt with that when he was in a position to do so. The players have respect for him because of what he's achieved in his career, so they listen and learn. Now we have a squad which has largely been assembled by Barton, and from what we saw today (more organised, seemed to know what was required in their role), and I think we'll see further improvements when the missing players are ready to play. No idea if this helps explain the "unfathomable fandom", but I've given it a go. I know there will be plenty who disagree, and, of course, they are quite entitled to have their opinion too, but I think it's been debated enough, so I'm not trying to set the sequence off again. I'm a Rovers fan as a result I've got no alternative but to support Barton, personally I would have employed a less controversial manager, I find the constant criticism of him across both forums becoming tiresome. It seems to me a fair number of posters will be happy if Rovers fail this season just so they are proven right and Barton is sacked. I couldn't give a damn whether I'm proven right or not. #thisisntmyrovers

Thomas looks a good player. Quick and nimble type. Too good for League 2 I reckon, but he'll soon get dragged down into it.

I'll be cheering the Rovers players (and Chris Lines) on Saturday, but won't be cheering the current manager.

that's the standard of referee you are always going to get in the basement division. There's a reason those guys are 4th tier officials... The referee yesterday was Josh Smith. Last season, he refereed 5 games in League Two, 7 in League One and 5 in the Championship. I suspected that the officials might prove to be biased and/or incompetent in the early minutes, when Mansfield's feisty left-back committed one of the most obvious and outrageous foul throws I've ever seen (heel up, leg stretched back horizontally, waist height). Neither the referee nor the (male) assistant (who was only 5 yards away) spotted it. A small incident, but it made me wonder. [Has there been a change in the Laws? An Italian player "foul-threw" almost as badly in the Euro final, again without being penalised]. Another indicative incident in the second half: Zain Westbrooke fell down 30 yards from the Mansfield goal. I suspected that he hadn't been fouled - the ref booked him, presumably for simulation. But why get the yellow card out only for that incidence of simulation? I reckon I have seen about half-a-dozen similar "falls" from opponents in every game we've played since about 2010. One particularly egregious example was the fall in the penalty area by Semenyo in the last match at the Memorial Stadium before lockdown. Unpunished. To those two small incidents I cite from yesterday's match, I could add another twenty minor decisions where Mr Smith showed extreme leniency to Mansfield, but treated Rovers with the utmost strictness. Other posters in this thread have quoted some of the examples. That's the context against which the referee's two major decisions should be judged. Ah well. One of the matches Josh Smith refereed last season in the Championship was Millwall's 4-1 annihilation of C**& '82. So he's not all bad.

Really not meant as supercilious but I do still find some words odd as English has always been my 2nd language, hence the ? Surely it’s sew? However, back to the game. I went with my mate and our two 15 year old lads. Throughout the game the officials were awful. Just before the corner that led to the pen the lineswoman inexplicably gave a free kick right in front of us after Hoole, who was superb, had beaten 2 players and was on the way to crossing a dangerous ball into their box. The stupid cow flagged when the 2nd player threw himself down and the ball was quickly moved forward and they got the corner and pen. Can’t comment on the red card or pen awards because they were right up the other end. It did seem to me the ref was itching to give everything Mansfield’s way, a real lower league homer. Let’s be fair, we try and influence the ref our way at the Mem. I thought we did OK, obviously missing several players but we competed and I think there’s more to come from the squad. We left after the pen went in because our train was at 1550. For those that don’t know, the railway station is perhaps 500 yards from the ground and visible on the hill. We walked out of the away end to cross the retail park and walk up to the station and outside were met by a phalanx of Police. We were stopped and told we had to wait for a Police escort to the station. I told the cop in front of me we wanted to go to the station and he refused to let us past. I told him our train was in a few mins and he said we wouldn’t be getting that train. The next wasn’t for an hour and I tried to walk past. I was pushed back and told to wait or I would be arrested. I asked why we were being illegally detained. What legislation they were using etc etc and that we would be safely on the station before the Mansfield fans even got to the area behind the away end. My mate was making the same comments to other officers, as were a number of other Rovers fans. One bloke with a lad pointed out his car and said he just wanted to get in it and drive home! Realising I was not getting anywhere I walked along the line until I found an older cop. I asked if I could walk to the station and he said of course. I went back, pulled my mate away from his discussion and the 4 of us walked past this sensible guy and went to the station without incident. We stood on the platform and watched as, a few minutes later there was an almighty kerfuffle on the road outside the ground where a huge body of Rovers fans were boxed in by Police while some Mansfield’s idiots were trying to have a pop. There were sirens blaring and other Police vehicles could be seen screaming up. We got on the train and left them to it. The whole problem was called by the stupid Police, kettlling all the Rovers fans so the Mansfield idiots could come and have go. If we had meekly done as we were told we would have got caught up in all that Sh1t and would have missed our train. I don’t know if they’re not used to dealing with large away followings, but I thought the Police operation was a shambles. I know many don’t like me saying it but the police have been causing violence at football ever since I can remember. They have such huge power of arrest, in a football situation that you could argue it’s as much as over a terror threat. I feel for anyone who went through this crap

The useless twat waved play on and when our player complained the fat Tnuc booked him. unbelievable Geoff.

All good, Stevenage will suffer similar biased officiating in this case and we'll cruise to a simple victory with the assistance of the officials. Just one thing, if officials favour home teams, just how bad were Rovers last season to lose that many home matches?

Lennie must go!To find out if PT can do it on his own!🙄 That went well ay! Get rid of GC.Get him out,I want pretty football like Barca.🙄 I don't care that we're actually in a promotion battle. Barton must go! Does'nt matter it would mess up yet another season.

No it doesnt ,however a few years ago there was a flag mentioned on this forum with 'Gloucester gas' and a picture of Fred West on it... Barton being the manager might be celebrated by some people but the idea that anyone else is going to start going to Rovers matches because of his notoriety is preposterous.

I don’t think anyone would suddenly become a Gashead just because Barton is manager but I do think his presence has emboldened those fans who revel in the “us against the world” mentality which is very bad for Rovers. It encourages the blame culture and the feeling that the constant under performance is not because of our own failings but because everyone is conspiring against us. You can see how Barton feels that way about himself but the difference is that when his time at Rovers comes to an end he will move on to his next media engagement but where will we be ?

I agree with you, Barton is probably developing a siege mentality as you say "us against the World" ("and if we stick together the World had better watch out"). That is quite a well known ploy and it might work for a while,if it does then Barton will move on,the club will return to being a 'family club' (in some peoples minds) the players, manager and fans will all return to being saints and angels and we will all live happily ever after.
