The thing with formations, there’s not just the one shape - there is your tucked in defensive shape, and your offensive shape - and if your defensive shape relies on offensive minded players fulfilling defensive role, it’s a risk. The start of this,game proves it, we are too open on at least one flank.
and you need to break out of defensive shape to attack, so you need to hold the ball to make ground or go long and likely lose it and tuck back in again. 3 4 1 2 is a clunky transition as you allow opponents to press you.
Don’t blame players for today’s debacle, this is pure manager without a working plan

There is no way back for Barton after this - just as there wasn't for Tisdale after the Accrington thumping (he was out within a couple of games); McGhee was sacked immediately after a 4 - 1 drubbing at York (we were 4 down before HT there too); and the calamitous Crewe & Plymouth home matches for Paul Buckle.
