I know its only a friendly BUT last season we were a laughing stock for being a non league team and today we lose to the team we are replacing. I don't accept this only a friendly when you are playing a local non league side. The worrying thing is that our forwards have failed to score in the last three games and today it sounds like Cheltenham created the more chances and deserved to win. I maintain that we are three experienced players short and we have not signed sufficient quality to take the step up. A quality winger and a striker with a scoring record at this level and a central midfielder capable of playing alongside Lines to compete with Mansell are essential and one can only hope that DC will see todays defeat as a signal that we are not going to be able to compete this season on the complete cheap.
Sorry DC but we should have a team at this stage capable of easily containing Cheltenham and securing victory. Before anyone asks I did not, thankfully, go today because I sensed what was going to happen and did not want to come away losing to Non League Cheltenham.

Ralax, who cares about pre-season.
The 82ers lost to Weston in pre season last year, and they did ok.
Sure, we'd love to win every game, but fitness and tactics have to be the priority over results at this stage.

lets hope the fighting spirit that got us promoted, continues through to the league?

Lol it is only a friendly and you don't know how we prepared for the game. If we have been doing a lot of fitness work it will effect performance. All about fitness at this stage. Expect we will be doing less fitness work now and will treat the West Brom game as a league game.
We know what we have in the squad already and can use the loan market when needed.

And there we have it, the first pop at the best manager we have had in years and a ball hasn't even been kicked in a meaningful game yet. I put our seasons success down the fact that we scored so many goals in meaningless pre season friendlies.............said no football manager, ever.

So before today it was all positive with people expecting us to do well. Then, we lose a friendly and it's disaster and we're heading for relegation.

Friendly or not, we were lucky it was not 5 or 6. It was aimless from start to finish, and the worst players on the pitch were Bambi, Gisling and Mildenhall.
Hope we don't start with any of them Friday.

Thankfully ,as many of you say, today's result means absolutely nothing HOWEVER I am more worried now as to whether some of our players are up to the step up because Cheltenham are probably better than a lot of the teams we played last season but they went down. Can somebody who went today confirm whether players looked like they were trying or just using it as a physical exercise. IMO players should have personal pride to beat a lower placed team Friendly or not.

About as meaningful to our league performance this year as was last season's Trophy result against Bath City. No... LESS meaningful.

The lack of scoring is worrying, but not surprising, as soon as we play any team on our level or more we struggle. We are still short on quality as Steve K points out DCs comments of players demanding £1500 a week rang alarm bells with me, yet other clubs seemed to sign players without much trouble, and now DC states he is happy with a small squad, all this suggests our young fantastic manager is again working with a budget that has been slashed by the BoD before and especially after the Sainsburys decision went against us. Even though they quoted the playing budget was entirely from different pot. DC will have a tough job this season with the present squad to achieve a top seven finish.

Losing 2-1 to Cheltenham pre season is a disappointing result. It's not a deal breaker but I believe any team should want to go into the season from pre season with a bit of momentum,ie winning pre season games. We'll see.

If we lose the first three games of the season with no goals scored i will be concerned, but until then i think we need to trust and support dc and keep calm.

I'm sure if we had started with the same side that started the first half against Reading the result would have been different, but the main thing about these games is all about getting match fitness & not picking up any serious injuries. Two weeks time against Northampton will be the better gauge of how we may fair in the coming season.

We'd better get Puddy fit as quick as we can, Mildenhall was dreadful, the defence was all over the place, the midfield were non- existent and the forwards couldn't trap a bag of cement between them. Well it wasn't quite as bad as that but Mildenhall definitely at fault for the first goal and conceded the penalty which he thankfully saved but he wasn't very good at all to be honest. Their number 8 certainly gave most of our defence the runaround because they never got to grips with him playing off their shoulder, he was quick our defence wasn't. I think part of our problem is that we have been running two sides, I certainly haven't seen the same side put out twice so I hope Darrell knows his best eleven. It was a good game but never felt we really chased that hard during it, apparently there were 1017 Gasheads there
