Harriet Dart charges into first WTA semi-final at Transylvania Open with statement win..By Yasmin Syed.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/03/14/22/55354727-0-image-a-82_1647296719348.jpgHarriet Dart advanced to her first tour-level semi-final with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Nuria Parrizas Diaz at the Transylvania Open on Friday. The Brit came through qualifying to reach the main draw in Cluj and has made the most of her spot. She is also set to re-enter the world’s top 100 come Monday. "I’m really excited to keep it going," the world No. 103 said after her 97-minute victory. "And it's funny I didn't think either of us played particularly good tennis. I think both of us were a bit nervous. I was just happy that I fought really hard and kept my head together and managed to take the close games in the big moments." Dart is also through to the doubles semi-final in Cluj, teaming up with Tereza Mihalikova. The pair took out the top seeds on Thursday and the 27-year-old admitted that her outings on the doubles court were helping her singles game. She continued: "I mean I wouldn’t really say I’m a doubles player but I enjoy it. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/07/03/13/72793113-12259081-image-a-38_1688389074486.jpg"I enjoy playing with my friends and I think it really helps with my singles game. You play under pressure, deuce points obviously are like the bane of my life. It’s great to be able to practice some things. My coach always wants me to come to the net more and play my net game and the doubles is definitely helping me with that." Her incredible run in Romania continued in the singles on Friday as she advanced to the first WTA Tour semi-final of her career. The British No. 3 was previously 0-4 in quarter-finals, with all four coming on grass courts. Dart will now face either former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova or Sara Errani in the semi-final. She looks primed to re-enter the world’s top 100 when the rankings update, provisionally sitting at No. 92 in the world after her win over Parrizas Diaz. In the doubles semi-final, she will face compatriot Olivia Nicholls and Frenchwoman Elixane Lechemia.

Simona Halep confident of an imminent return to tennis after three-day hearing for doping appeal... with the former Wimbledon champion currently banned for four years. Report by Lewis Browning - Mail Online..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/09/18/81077967-0-image-a-3_1707504804452.jpgFormer Wimbledon and French Open champion Simona Halep is confident she will return to tennis soon after her appeal for a doping suspension was heard. Former World No 1 Halep was banned for four years in September after she was found to have ingested banned substance roxadustat from a urine sample at the 2022 US Open. The Romanian, 32, had feared her career would be all but over if the ban was upheld, but was optimistic after exiting sport's top court on Friday. There were three days of proceedings to appeal the suspension, which was the most significant doping ban that tennis had seen since Maria Sharapova’s in 2016. Speaking after the appeal hearing, Halep was confident she would be back on the court soon. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/09/18/81077963-0-image-a-2_1707504801374.jpg'I had the chance to show my defence and I really believe that the truth is going to come out and the day to be on court is going to be soon,' she told reporters outside the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in the Swiss city of Lausanne. Roxadustat is a banned drug that stimulates the production of red blood cells. She was provisionally suspended in October 2022 after testing positive in the US Open that year. Tennis anti-doping authorities also charged Halep with another doping offence last year due to irregularities in her athlete biological passport (ABP), a method designed to monitor different blood parameters. Howard Jacobs, Halep's lawyer, said CAS had heard her arguments but it was unclear when the court might issue its ruling. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/09/19/81078347-0-image-m-14_1707506301497.jpgHalep has blamed contaminated licensed supplements for her positive test at the US Open. She has accused the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) of charging her with an ABP violation after the group of experts who assessed her profile learned her identity. An independent tribunal accepted Halep's argument that she had taken a contaminated supplement but determined the volume she ingested could not have resulted in the concentration of roxadustat found in her positive sample.

Transylvania Open: Harriet Dart misses out on WTA final with Karolina Pliskova defeat..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/06/25/18/72514503-12232121-image-a-1_1687714702479.jpgHarriet Dart missed out on her first WTA Tour final by losing in straight sets to former world number one Karolina Pliskova at the Transylvania Open. The British number three was beaten 6-3 6-3 by the Czech, who reached her first WTA final in three-and-a-half years. Dart, who came through qualifying, beat Spain's Nuria Parrizas-Diaz to reach her first semi-final on the WTA Tour. However Pliskova put an end to her impressive run in Cluj, Romania. A double break allowed the Czech to take a firm grip on the first set and prevail 6-3. She went 4-0 up in the second set but allowed Dart to claw her way back into it, before eventually defeating the Briton. Pliskova will meet Romanian Ana Bogdan in Sunday's final in front of a home crowd. After reaching her 17th WTA Tour final, she said: "I know how you guys can be tough if I play against Romanian girls so let us see but no matter what I'll accept you'll cheer for Anna. "I just want to play good tennis. There is always a chance with my game to win and I've reached finals already so there is no pressure. "I want to win the title, because I haven't won a title for a couple of years already but also I haven't played a final for a while so I will enjoy it."

Qatar Open: Emma Raducanu beaten by Anhelina Kalinina in first round..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/12/16/81166625-13074775-image-a-21_1707753703850.jpgEmma Raducanu said she "struggled with everything" as she was beaten by world number 30 Anhelina Kalinina in the 1st round of the Qatar Open in Doha. The Briton was well below par in a one-sided first set, hitting 15 unforced errors to her Ukrainian opponent's two. She saved two match points in a far more competitive second but Kalinina came through to win 6-0 7-6 (8-6). "I was struggling with everything - serve, return, forehand, backhand," Raducanu, 21, told Sky Sports. "I felt like I never really got into it." The former US Open champion is in the early stages of her comeback after missing most of 2023 following surgery on both of her hands and left ankle. She won one match in Auckland in her first tournament back, reached the second round of the Australian Open and beat world number 36 Marie Bouzkova in Abu Dhabi last week. But that win was followed by a comprehensive defeat by second seed Ons Jabeur and, having been given another wildcard this week in Qatar, she suffered another early exit. Raducanu had a set point at 6-5 on her serve in the second-set breaker but Kalinina saved it and took the next two points to seal victory. The Briton hit 48 unforced errors compared to 22 by Kalinina, who will play eighth seed Jelena Ostapenko next. "It was combination of things," Raducanu said, "It was my first day-match I have played in a year. That is different. "I need to practise training outside a bit more. The lights, conditions, shadows... it is really hard to see the ball, I found towards the end. "When my tennis isn't there I have to try and at least fight and I did that in the second set." Raducanu said she will now return home after consecutive weeks on tour but said she needs to "schedule my tournaments a bit better". "I just struggled with the timing of the ball," she said. "It will come with more time practising as well as matches. "It is hard for me to get used to the tour schedule. It is one tournament then another straight away. "I need to schedule my tournaments a bit better and try to get more matches under my belt." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/12/16/81167171-13074775-image-a-30_1707753989166.jpg

ATP Rio Open: Briton Cameron Norrie beats Hugo Dellien..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/18/05/80162599-0-image-a-3_1705556678682.jpgBritish number one Cameron Norrie started the defence of his ATP Rio Open title with a routine 6-3 6-2 win over over Bolivian Hugo Dellien in Brazil. Norrie, 28, made light work of an opponent who gave him a tough time at the quarter-final stage in 2023. It took Norrie, who offered up just one break point in the match, one hour and 21 minutes to seal victory. He will meet Chile's Tomas Barrios Vera for the first time in his career in the next round. "I served much better than last week, and I was a bit more patient," said Norrie. "I knew I had to play point for point and really make the rallies a bit longer. I think I learned from last week with that, and I'm just happy to be back in Brazil." In Mexico, Britain's Dan Evans reached the second round of the Los Cabos Open with a 6-2 6-4 victory over Russia's Roman Safiullin. Evans will face Thanasi Kokkinakis in the next round after the Australian beat Briton Jack Draper 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.

Qatar Open: Andy Murray beats Alexandre Muller in Doha to end losing streak..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/02/26/08/68092843-11794783-image-a-1_1677400398453.jpgAndy Murray earned his first win of the 2024 season with a superb performance to beat France's Alexandre Muller in the Qatar Open first round. Britain's Murray ended a six-match losing streak with a 6-1 7-6 (7-5) victory over the world number 75. A manic celebration showed what it meant to the 36-year-old, who also raised his arms in relief when reminded it was his first victory of the year. Murray, ranked 50th, plays 18-year-old Czech Jakub Mensik in the second round. "Obviously the last few months have been tough on the court for me, I've not won many matches and lost a lot of close ones, so I'm delighted to get through," said Murray. "I'm proud I managed to get through the match, get a win and hopefully this is the start of a better run." Murray's victory also came in spite of a knee injury which required treatment early in the first set. Already a break up at 2-0, it looked as though it could be another frustrating day for the former world number one when he felt a tweak in his left knee and asked for a medical timeout after he held for 3-0. Speaking to the physio on court, the Scot explained he had been feeling pain in the area for a few days and had received treatment for a cyst on his meniscus the day before Tuesday's match. To his relief he was able to play on unhindered, continuing to show some of the best tennis he has shown in what has been a chastening start to the season. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/02/25/17/68079293-0-image-a-108_1677346600580.jpg

Qatar Open: Andy Murray loses to teenager Jakub Mensik in 3 tie-break sets...By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport.
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/22/00/81559129-13111393-image-a-87_1708562347375.jpg Andy Murray lost to a teenage opponent for only the third time since 2007Britain's Andy Murray was unable to back up his first win of 2024 as he lost to 18-year-old Jakub Mensik in a rollercoaster Qatar Open match. Murray, 36, ended a run of six defeats by beating Alexandre Muller on Tuesday but lost 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-4) to 116th-ranked Mensik 24 hours later. Trailing 5-2 in the decider, the Scot clawed back both breaks as his Czech opponent could not serve out. However, Mensik reset mentally to win and reach his first ATP quarter-final. "I'm just speechless right now, I don't know what to say," said Mensik, who will play Russian top seed Andrey Rublev on Thursday. "It was a tough match - [Murray] is a great player and I watched him on the TV winning Wimbledon twice. It is unbelievable at this age he can still compete with the best players of the world." Elsewhere, Britain's Dan Evans lost 6-4 6-2 to Australia's Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round of the Los Cabos Open. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/22/00/81559207-13111393-image-a-88_1708562412384.jpgMurray was beaten by the Czech teenager in the second round of the Qatar Open in three setsThe outcome of the match could have been different had Murray won the first set, as he really should have done. On the first of two set points when leading 6-4 in the tie-break, Murray planted a volley into the net with the court gaping, drawing shrieks from the shocked crowd and leaving the Scot covering his face with his hand. Murray went on to lose the set and was suddenly chasing the match. Neither player was able to break serve in a tight second set before Murray, with confident hitting and delicate touches, levelled after making a fast start in another tie-break. Having not faced a break point since the third game of the match, Murray lost serve for 1-0 - shortly after taking a tumble on his right ankle - and an increasingly confident Mensik moved a double break up at 5-2. But Murray, just as he did to stop Mensik serving out the first set, used his vast experience to fight back. Sensing nervousness down the other end of the court, Murray increased the aggression of his groundstrokes to pile on the pressure but he could not maintain the momentum in the tie-break as Mensik regained his composure to seal a memorable win. Murray's frustrations were clear as he made a sharp exit after a tense contest lasting three hours and 23 minutes - the longest match in the Qatar Open's history. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/22/00/81559209-13111393-image-a-89_1708562418573.jpgMurray has struggled for form in the early stages of the 2024 season recording only one winHaving reached the final in Doha last year, Murray had a significant number of ranking points to defend - and losing in the second round means the former world number one will drop outside the top 60 next week. In a troubling start to 2024, Murray lost his opening four matches of the new season, which led to questions about how long he planned to keep playing and provoked a defiant response from the three-time Grand Slam champion. Murray, who turns 37 in May, insisted he would continue to "keep fighting" as he aims to play at a level which he believes he remains "capable of" delivering. Earning his first win of the year against French world number 75 Muller was a huge relief and a step in the right direction. Losing to Mensik - a talented player with a powerful game and considerably bright future, but yet to crack the world's top 100 - is another setback.

Cameron Norrie thrashes Tomas Barrios Vera at Rio Open to reach last eight..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/02/26/23/68109217-0-image-a-17_1677454789166.jpgBritish number one Cameron Norrie swept aside Tomas Barrios Vera 6-1 6-1 to reach the Rio Open quarter-finals. The defending champion needed just a minute over an hour on Thursday to beat the Chilean, whose serve was broken six times in the one-sided contest. Norrie hit 21 winners in his victory on the clay and will play Brazilian Thiago Seyboth Wild next. "I really played well and I was really accurate," said Norrie, who has slipped to 23rd in the ATP world rankings. "I hit close to the lines and was very disciplined on the return. I enjoyed it." He added: "I'm going to keep focusing on myself and my level and I want to make sure to keep taking care of my matches like that."

Cameron Norrie reaches Rio Open semi-finals with victory over Thiago Seyboth Wild..d3gvyx4eg3tne0.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Img37534285-1.jpgBritish number one Cameron Norrie moved into the semi-finals of the Rio Open with a 6-1 3-6 6-2 victory over home favourite Thiago Seyboth Wild. Defending champion Norrie wrapped the first set up in 30 minutes but an error-strewn second set allowed the Brazilian to level. The 28-year-old raced to a 5-1 lead in the decider and sealed victory with his fifth match point. "I was just really proud of how I fought hard," said Norrie. "It was so humid and it was tough physically. I managed to break there in the end, so I'm proud of myself." Norrie, ranked 23rd, has reached his first ATP Tour semi-final since May and will face 22-year-old Argentine qualifier and world number 113 Mariano Navone. The other semi-final sees an all-Argentine encounter between Francisco Cerundolo and Sebastian Baez. "I had a tough patch at the end of last year and I just wanted to stay strong. It's wins like this that make it count," added Norrie. No player has won the Rio Open twice, while Norrie has joined Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in reaching the semi-final of the tournament the year after winning it.

ATP Rio Open: Defending champion Cameron Norrie loses to qualifier Mariano Navone..www.atptour.com/-/media/images/news/2024/02/22/20/42/norrie-rio-2024-thursday.jpgDefending champion Cameron Norrie lost in straight sets to Argentine qualifier Mariano Navone in the semi-finals of the ATP Rio Open. Norrie, 28, was aiming to win back-to-back titles at the Brazilian clay court tournament after defeating Carlos Alcaraz in last year's final. But the British number one struggled in hot and humid conditions in Rio. The 22-year-old Navone, ranked 113th in the world, won 6-4 6-2 to reach his first ATP final. He will face compatriot Sebastien Baez after the world number 30 won 7-5 6-4 against another Argentine, Francisco Cerundolo. Both Navone and Norrie broke serve in the opening two games before Navone gained the decisive break in the seventh game of the first set. They exchanged breaks again at the start of the second set, and Navone broke Norrie once more in the third and fifth games before closing out the win. "It's incredible," said Navone. "I played so good all week. Today was very hot and humid, it's tough to play in these conditions, but I've played six matches in a row so I feel pretty good."

Andy Murray: Briton suggests he may only have few months left of career..By Jess Anderson, BBC Sport.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/22/00/81559129-13111393-image-a-87_1708562347375.jpgGreat Britain's Andy Murray has suggested he may only have a "few months" left of his tennis career after earning his second win of 2024 in Dubai. The 36-year-old beat Canadian Denis Shapovalov 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-3. "I probably don't have too long left but I'll do as best as I can these last few months," he said after the victory. Murray was on a six-match losing streak until last week when he secured his first win of the year in Doha. "I still love competing and still love the game but it gets harder and harder to compete the older you get, to keep your body fit and fresh," he said. Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray's potential retirement has been a topic of discussion for several years after the Scot underwent hip replacement surgery in 2019. But Murray defied the odds to return to the court, winning another title and reaching three other finals, the last of which was last year when he lost to Daniil Medvedev in Doha. This year, however, Murray lost his opening four matches of the 2024 season and said he was in a "terrible moment" but that he "won't quit" despite speculation around when he might decide to retire. He had looked out of sorts at the Australian Open, and during two subsequent ATP Tour defeats in France, but had said he was determined to produce performances he knew he was still capable of. Beating world number 75 Alexandre Muller last week in Doha was one of those performances but Murray went on to lose to 18-year-old Jakub Mensik, ranked 116th, in the second round and dropped to 67th in the world as a result. During that match, Murray appeared to tell his box "this game is not for me any more" but, when asked about those comments in Dubai on Monday, he said: "People read a lot into what I say on the court and it's not always rational."

The 27-year-old beat world number 36 Tsurenko 6-3 6-1 in one hour and 10 minutes on her tournament debut. Boulter is ranked 49 in the world but the result means she could rise to a career-high 43 when the next rankings are released. She will face 13th-ranked Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round. Boulter has not played since January when she missed out on a place in the quarter-final of the Linz Open in Austria, but against Tsurenko, who withdrew from her past two matches because of an elbow injury, she was dominant. After trading breaks early on in the opener, Boulter secured a double break to take the set. She then recovered from an early break of serve in the second to comfortably win the next six games without facing a break point. "I know how tough she can be to play against," said Boulter after the win. "I knew today would be an absolute battle. I don't think either of us played our best tennis but it's about finding a way and I did that today."

Draper held serve throughout and converted four of his five break-point opportunities to win 6-0 6-4 in one hour and 26 minutes in Acapulco. He will next face Japanese lucky loser Yoshihito Nishioka. Draper's compatriot Dan Evans went out after losing 2-6 7-5 7-6 (7-5) to American Ben Shelton. Evans served for the match in the third set after surviving three match points but Shelton, the world number 17, came back at him. "Definitely a really tricky match-up for me," Shelton said. "Dan is a guy that I know well, we have a lot of banter in the locker room and [he is a] guy whose game presents a lot of challenges. "So to be able to come out of this first match here with a win after losing the first set is a big accomplishment for me."

The British number three broke twice in each set as he cruised past the Serb, who is ranked three places below him in the world at 53rd, 6-3 6-3 in Acapulco. Draper, 22, takes on defending champion and world number nine Alex de Minaur in the last four on Saturday. The Australian fought back to beat Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 1-6 6-3 6-3 in his quarter-final. Draper beat both Kecmanovic and American Tommy Paul, who he defeated in his opening match in Acapulco, en route to the final of the Adelaide Open in January, where he lost to Czech player Jiri Lehecka.

Emma Raducanu given Miami Open wildcard..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/03/02/16/68267019-11813145-image-a-23_1677775546092.jpgBritain's Emma Raducanu has been given a wildcard to play at the Miami Open next month. The 21-year-old has not played since losing to Ukraine's Anhelina Kalinina in Doha on 12 February. Raducanu is ranked 252nd in the world as she continues her comeback from an eight-month injury lay-off. Former major champions Venus Williams, 43, and Caroline Wozniacki, 33, have also been given wildcards for the hard-court tournament in Miami. The event, which is one of the biggest outside of the four Grand Slam tournaments, starts on 17 March. It is is still unclear if Raducanu will play before then at the Indian Wells event in California, which precedes Miami as part of the 'Sunshine Double' and begins on 6 March. On Thursday, she posted an Instagram story appearing to show that she was arriving in Los Angeles. Raducanu, who shot to prominence with a stunning triumph at the 2021 US Open as a teenage qualifier, is ranked too low for direct entry into the top WTA tournaments. A protected injury ranking of 103rd helped the former British number one enter last month's Australian Open without needing to go through qualifying. But the rule - which allows players to freeze their ranking if they are out for six months or more - has not enabled Raducanu to move directly into the Indian Wells or Miami main draws. Eight wildcards are available for Indian Wells, which has already awarded two to American seven-time major champion Williams and Danish former world number one Wozniacki. If Raducanu does not receive a wildcard in Indian Wells, she could play in qualifying. Raducanu missed most of the 2023 season after operations on both of her wrists, as well as ankle surgery, before returning to tour in January. She has won three of the seven matches of her comeback so far and, instead of taking a wildcard for Dubai after losing to Kalinina, returned to the UK for a training block at the LTA's National Tennis Centre. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/03/24/23/55772739-10649907-image-a-52_1648164070895.jpg

Andrey Rublev: Russian defaulted in Dubai semi-final for yelling at line judge..By Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent.ss-i.thgim.com/public/incoming/fm8vnt/article67905115.ece/alternates/LANDSCAPE_1200/2050807828.jpgAndrey Rublev has been disqualified from the Dubai Tennis Championships for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Russian second seed screamed in the face of a line judge following a disputed call in the third set of his semi-final with Alexander Bublik. A Russian-speaking official told ATP supervisor Roland Herfel that Rublev had sworn at the line judge in Russian. Rublev denied he was speaking Russian, but was defaulted for unsportsmanlike conduct by umpire Miriam Bley. The world number five, who was trailing 6-5 in the final set, will lose all of his prize money and ranking points for the week. Fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina, world number 12 in the women's rankings, called the decision a "joke". "So you can just default a player, take his points and money away, without even checking a video replay? What a joke, another confirmation we need a VAR in tennis and electronic line calling on all tournaments," Kasatkina posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. Russian-born Kazakh Bublik, who received a code violation for smashing his racquet earlier in the match, was awarded the win at 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-5. He will face top seed Daniil Medvedev or Frenchman Ugo Humbert in Saturday's final.

San Diego Open: Britain's Katie Boulter beats Donna Vekic in straight sets to reach 1st WTA 500 semi-final..assets.tennismajors.com/uploads/2024/01/PANORAMIC_284045_0051-1296x675-1706548206.jpgBritish number one Katie Boulter stormed through to her first WTA 500 semi-final with a straight-set victory over Croatia's Donna Vekic at the San Diego Open. Boulter overcame strong winds in California to wrap up a 6-4 6-3 win over the seventh seed. The 27-year-old will play Daria Saville of Australia or American third seed Emma Navarro in the last four. "It was an absolute battle in very tricky conditions," said Boulter. "It was not easy to get any rhythm because we are both big hitters. I found it tough to get into the match and just tried to stay as strong as I could in the head. "Somehow I found a way over the line in the first and played some really good stuff in the second." Boulter, ranked 49 in the world, will move up to the brink of the top 40 and a career-high ranking after this latest win. World number 28 Vekic started strongly and made the first break of the match to move into a 3-1 lead. But Boulter, who beat second seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in the last round, surged back into the match, winning nine of the next 10 games to take the first set and race into a 4-0 lead in the second. She then converted her first match point with a powerful forehand after the longest rally of the match to seal the win.

Mexican Open: Britain's Jack Draper forced to retire from semi-final..westobserver.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/132789030_90fc209b7638771fad1d69bbb6282bfa074b168f-768x432.jpgBritain's Jack Draper was forced to retire in the third set of his Mexican Open semi-final in Acapulco. The 22-year-old had treatment from the physiotherapist and tournament doctor in the second set against Australian defending champion Alex de Minaur. De Minaur had taken the opening set 6-3 before the British number three came back to win the second 6-2 thanks to some strong returns. Draper was trailing 4-0 in the decider when he withdrew from the match. The Australian world number nine wished Draper "a speedy recovery". De Minaur added: "Even though I dropped that second set, I knew he was hurting from then and I just told myself to bring up the intensity, try and get a head start in the third set and make it a little bit harder for him. "He's a hell of a player, a hell of a talent and I hope it's nothing too serious." De Minaur will play Norwegian Casper Ruud in the final after he defeated Denmark's Holger Rune 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Katie Boulter: British number one reaches her first WTA 500 final in San Diego..assets.tennismajors.com/uploads/2024/01/PANORAMIC_284045_0051-1296x675-1706548206.jpgBritain's Katie Boulter reached her first WTA 500 final by beating American Emma Navarro in straight sets at the San Diego Open. Boulter, 27, won 6-3 6-1 in 74 minutes to reach Sunday's final and will face Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk, who got past American Jessica Pegula 7-6 (7-4) 6-1. The British number one and world number 49 dominated on her serve, winning more than 87% of first-serve points. She had just two break points against her serve, saving both. Boulter also had to deal with a rain delay before she could overcome the third seed, the world number 26. "Today was one of those matches where everything just clicks," she said. "I came on the court and started the first few games and I could feel the power that she had and the way she works and manoeuvres the ball. I knew I had to come up with something better." WTA 500 events are so-called as they offer 500 ranking points to the winner. Boulter, who will reach her highest career ranking thanks to her performances in California, won her sole WTA Tour title to date last year at the Nottingham Open, a WTA 250 event. For comparison, a Grand Slam champion gets 2,000 ranking points, and WTA Finals winners can earn up to 1,500 points. Sunday's final will be the first career meeting between Boulter and Kostyuk, who came back from 5-1 down in the opening set to earn victory over top seed Pegula, her first win against a top-five player. assets.tennismajors.com/uploads/2024/03/Marta-Kostyuk-1296x675-1709362908.jpgUkraine's Marta Kostyuk
