Australian Open 2024: Cameron Norrie wins..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Melbourne Park.
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/18/05/80162599-0-image-a-3_1705556678682.jpg Cameron Norrie produced one of the most satisfying wins of his career at the Australian OpenBritain's Cameron Norrie reached the Australian Open third round by fighting back to win a five-set match in Melbourne for the first time. Norrie, seeded 19th, went two sets down against Italian qualifier Guilio Zeppieri but rallied to win 3-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-4 6-4. The 28-year-old will face 11th seed Casper Ruud in the third round. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/18/06/80162617-12977231-image-a-17_1705558188132.jpgNorrie, who has never progressed beyond the third round in Melbourne, ensured the British contingent made a winning start when he overcame an inspired opponent in testing conditions. Having lost to 22-year-old Zeppieri in their only meeting four years ago on the Rome clay, Norrie said there would be an element of revenge in his mind. And the dogged nature of his comeback - a three-hour match spread over almost six hours because of two rain delays - hinted at that motivation. Left-hander Zeppieri's powerful game, consisting of a heavy serve and fizzing forehands, caused a host of problems for Norrie in the first two sets. Norrie also needed treatment on his right knee and occasionally flexed the left wrist which caused him concern coming into the event, while a stiff breeze also posed issues for both players. Nevertheless he started the third set with purpose, breaking in the first game and wrapping it up between the rain delays. Another early break was enough to secure the fourth set and, with his greater experience coming to the fore, Norrie won three games in a row to clinch the decider. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/18/06/80157935-12977231-image-a-14_1705558142830.jpg

Australian Open 2024: Cameron Norrie faces Casper Ruud in third round..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/01/17/06/53012613-0-image-a-17_1642402005444.jpgCameron Norrie will need to beat Casper Ruud for the first time in four matches if he is to advance to the Australian Open fourth round on Saturday. Norrie is the sole Briton remaining in the singles in Melbourne but he has never gone further than round three. Both survived five-set matches on Thursday, with Norrie coming back from two sets down against Guilio Zeppieri, while Norwegian 11th seed Ruud came through a final-set tie-break. They will not play before 6am... Norrie, seeded 19th, struggled past his ongoing wrist pain to win 3-6 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 6-4 6-4. "I think I was making it a bigger deal than it probably was in the beginning of the match," said Norrie, who pulled out of an ATP event in Auckland to protect the injury. "I was addressing it too much. Once I switched my focus and my energy towards how to win and how to play and how to win points, I think that was key." In a three-hour match spread over almost six hours because of two rain delays, British number one Norrie also required treatment on his right knee, which he described as a "precautionary" measure. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/06/02/20/58609805-0-image-a-34_1654197167539.jpgMeanwhile, Ruud prevailed in a deciding tie-break against Australia's Max Purcell to wrap up a 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 3-6 7-6 (10-7) victory in three hours and 50 minutes. "He's beaten me a few times in some really big matches," Norrie, 28, said of Ruud. "I think a lot of the time was down to execution and him staying a bit calmer than me in the bigger moments." A three-time Grand Slam finalist, Ruud has only dropped one set in three victories over Norrie - at the ATP Finals in 2021 - and believes the South African-born Briton will be out for "revenge". "He's a great player. I need to be on top of my game if I want to hang in there with him," the 25-year-old said. "I know what has given me the win. He will try to seek revenge and find a way to beat me."

Australian Open 2024 results: Cameron Norrie beats Casper Ruud in Melbourne..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Melbourne Park.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31926390.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_TENNIS-AUS-OPEN.jpgBritish number one Cameron Norrie produced his finest display in recent months to beat 11th seed Casper Ruud and reach the Australian Open fourth round for the first time. Norrie, seeded 19th, played aggressively and smartly in a 6-4 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 6-3 win in Melbourne. The 28-year-old will face German sixth seed Alexander Zverev or American teenager Alex Michelsen on Monday. "Honestly it is so special," Norrie said about reaching the last 16. Norrie is the only Briton remaining in either singles draw. Beating three-time Grand Slam finalist Ruud means Norrie is the first British player to reach the fourth round at Melbourne Park since Kyle Edmund in 2018. "I had to play really brave and almost won that second set, but I didn't let it bother me and it was a good mental performance," added Norrie. "I stuck to my gameplan and I came through. I've been working hard in the off season to be a little more aggressive and managed to do that."

Australian Open 2024 results: Cameron Norrie loses to Alexander Zverev in Melbourne..ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/22/1daeeb42-5418-4a15-8fc3-21567c66b179.jpgBritain's Cameron Norrie fell short of the Australian Open quarter-finals as sixth seed Alexander Zverev edged an absorbing five-setter by winning a first-to-10 deciding tie-break. Norrie, seeded 19th, lost 7-5 3-6 6-3 4-6 7-6 (10-3) to Germany's Zverev. After one of his best performances at a major to beat Casper Ruud in the third round, Norrie played even better against Olympic champion Zverev. But his mistakes in the tie-break of a tense final set proved costly. Norrie, who had never previously beaten a top-10 opponent at a Grand Slam event, had been bold and aggressive in the key moments as he twice fought back to level. However, he was unable to execute as well in the decisive tie-break and looked understandably dejected as he walked back to the locker room. "At the end of the day it is a Grand Slam and everyone is playing their best here. Cam has been playing amazing tennis and I'm just happy to be through," said a relieved Zverev, who secured victory after four hours and five minutes. Zverev, aiming for his first Grand Slam title, will face Spanish second seed Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter-finals on Wednesday. Two-time major champion Alcaraz, 20, won 6-4 6-4 6-0 in his last-16 match against Serbia's Miomir Kecmanovic. Norrie had not beaten Zverev in their four previous meetings - not even taking a set - and planned to analyse videos of those matches to concoct a gameplan which could hurt the former world number two. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/22/869e6a1c-11e6-4fc0-aa0b-41ea0e702daa.jpgFacing a similar winless run against three-time major finalist Ruud, Norrie regularly rushed to the net and played boldly in an attacking display. The question was whether the British number one would employ similar tactics against Zverev or retreat to a more accustomed style of grinding from the baseline. While he was not as keen to go forward as often, wary of Zverev's ability to pass him with his potent backhand, Norrie continued to mix up things in a bid to reach the Melbourne quarter-finals for the first time. But, after executing so well throughout the contest, the 28-year-old's game unravelled in the fifth-set tie-break. Two poor dropshots helped Zverev move into a 4-2 lead and from that point, it quickly slipped away from Norrie. A double fault put Zverev 6-2 ahead and the German used the momentum to seal a victory that ended British interest in the singles at Melbourne Park this year. Despite the pain of not reaching the second Grand Slam quarter-final of his career, Norrie will eventually reflect on an encouraging start to the 2024 season. The left-hander struggled for form at the end of last season but, seeing him returning reinvigorated with extra facets to his game, bodes well for his hopes of returning to the world's top 10.

It ensures there will be at least one Briton in the semi-finals as Watson and Salisbury face Britain's Neal Skupski and American Desirae Krawczyk next. Elsewhere on Monday, Skupski went out of the men's doubles in the third round, as did Lloyd Glasspool. Jamie Murray and Russia's Yana Sizikova lost in round two of the mixed doubles. They were beaten 6-3 6-4 by the sixth-seeded pairing of Gabriela Dabrowski of Canada and American Nathaniel Lammons. Watson and Salisbury, in the mixed doubles as alternates, gained a 6-3 6-2 win over eighth seeds Ellen Perez of Australia and Jean-Julien Rojer of the Netherlands. In the men's doubles, Skupski and Mexican partner Santiago Gonzalez, the fifth seeds, lost 3-6 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 in the third round to Uruguay's Ariel Behar and Adam Pavlasek of the Czech Republic. Glasspool and Rojer were the 11th seeds but fell to a 3-6 6-4 7-6 (10-3) loss to Monaco's Hugo Nys and Poland's Jan Zielinski.

Australian Open 2024 results: Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk reach mixed doubles final..
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/07/07/20/60009445-0-image-a-20_1657223903049.jpg Neal Skupski and Desirae Krawczyk defended their mixed doubles title at WimbledonBritain's Neal Skupski and American Desirae Krawczyk beat Australian duo Olivia Gadecki and Marc Polmans to reach the final of the mixed doubles at the Australian Open for the first time. Skupski and Krawczyk won 6-4 6-1 on Margaret Court Arena in Melbourne. They are aiming for their third Grand Slam title together after twice winning the mixed doubles at Wimbledon. In Friday's final they will meet the pairing of Taiwanese Hsieh Su-wei and Poland's Jan Zielinski. Gadecki and Polmans broke Krawczyk's serve in the third game of the match, but second seeds Skupski and Krawczyk fought back from 4-2 down and won four successive games to take the opening set. The second set was more one sided with breaks of serve in the fourth and sixth games. Hsieh and Zielinski, the third seeds, defeated the Australian team of Jaimee Fourlis and Andrew Harris 7-6 (10-8) 6-2. Skupski, 34, will be in a mixed doubles final for a third time, while it will be 30-year-old Krawczyk's fifth after she also won mixed doubles competitions at the French Open and US Open in 2021 alongside Britain's Joe Salisbury. "It would be nice to add to the collection, but it is one point at a time," said Skupski. "It's the first time in the final in Australia and Desirae is going for all four Grand Slams in her career." Hsieh, 38, is aiming for her first mixed doubles Grand Slam title having won six women's doubles Slam events, including Wimbledon on four occasions, while Zielinski, 27, is trying to win his first Slam tournament. Krawczyk and Harris are in a relationship and Krawczyk expected them to be on opposite sides of the court in the final. "I thought I was going to be playing my boyfriend. Tough loss," said Krawczyk when she found out who their opponents would be. Skupski added: "It's going to be very difficult. Zielinski likes playing in Australia and Hsieh is a legend of the game and she seems to just be getting better. "She is very talented so we will have to do our homework."

I started off really well for two sets. I felt that he wasn’t feeling too great on court and I kept pushing. “Then, in the third set, I missed match point but you know this is tennis and I just tried to be ready for the next set. I started really well and obviously the atmosphere was really great. “I was looking forward for this match. It’s always nice to have this kind of player where you can learn from. I lost last year in the semis in Wimbledon. I learned a lot from that, it’s all part of the process. "I’m really happy to share this with you guys and my team.” ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/26/9ab45141-858a-49a3-a58c-e43e9b7f0008.jpgHaving beaten Novak Djokovic in three of their last four meetings, Jannik Sinner was asked what about his game works against the world number one:“I don’t know – ask him!" he joked. “I think we play really similar and you have to first of all return as many times as possible. He is also an incredible server. "I just try to push and move him around. I’m not going to tell you the tactics. I have the feeling I might play him hopefully a couple of different matches.” On how he has improved since first playing Djokovic in Monte Carlo in 2021, he added:“I had the chance when I was younger to practice with him in Monaco and the process of learning from the best players in the world started. "Move the ball a little bit more, be a little bit unpredictable. The serve has improved a lot but I have the feeling I can still improve a lot. "I have a great team behind me and will keep pushing.” ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/26/1b3b5f4f-9b66-4176-9fb4-aceb4c775ade.jpgAnd finally from Jannik Sinner, on what it means to him to reach his first Grand Slam final, the Italian said:"I don’t know what to say! "I started off with a couple of exhibition matches. The confidence from the end of last year has kept the belief I can play against the best players in the world. "I can play my first final and see how it goes. I will try my best." On the second semi-final between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev, he added:“I will watch it because I am a huge tennis fan. It’s good for me to watch it. “I’m a bit more relaxed now. They are incredible players and they have met many times. "Zverev is back to 100% and also Daniil – it will be a great match and we’ll see what happens on Sunday.” ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/26/f65d7ba2-7432-407e-accd-e26a52b3f6da.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/26/f04c7b24-908c-4233-b82f-605e3e0dec9e.jpg

Andy Murray beaten in Montpellier..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/15/10/80024861-12964335-image-a-32_1705315881406.jpgAndy Murray suffered a first-round exit at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier, Murray was beaten 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 by France's Benoit Paire. The 36-year-old, who was also beaten in the first round at the Australian Open, has now won only one of his last eight matches. Murray looked to be rediscovering his form when he took the first set in just 38 minutes, but Paire hit back to take a much closer set on a tie-break. Paire then had the better of the decider, eventually taking it 6-3 despite Murray saving four match points. Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray has now lost all three of his matches in 2024 and slipped to 49th in the world rankings. The Scot has previously hinted he would think about retiring if he did not enjoy playing this year, having struggled for form in the closing stages of the 2023 season.

Tara Moore doping clearance decision to be challenged by Tennis Integrity Agency..By Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/12/23/18/79289281-12896825-image-a-8_1703357602225.jpg British tennis star Tara Moore was rising up the rankings when she was provisionally suspended from the sport in 2022 for testing positive for a banned substance. She has now been cleared after 19 months with a panel finding contaminated meat caused the failed test
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) is to appeal against the decision that Briton Tara Moore was not to blame for a positive doping test. Moore, 31, was ranked as Britain's leading women's doubles player when she was provisionally banned in May 2022, but always maintained her innocence. She tested positive for nandrolone and boldenone while competing in Bogota, Colombia the previous month. Last month, her provisional suspension was immediately lifted. An independent tribunal decided contaminated meat was the source of the prohibited substances detected - and that the player "bore no fault or negligence". However, the ITIA is appealing against the independent tribunal's decision about the nandrolone ingested, with that appeal to take place at the Court of Arbitration for Sport at a future date. In response to the independent tribunal's ruling in December, Moore said she had suffered "19 months of lost time and emotional distress" with her reputation damaged as a result of the case. "It's going to take more than 19 months to rebuild, repair and recuperate what we've been through," she wrote on X.

In Abu Dhabi Heather Watson joins Emma Raducanu in the second round..by PA Sport

The convincing first-round win was Watson's best in terms of ranking since 2017, with Kudermetova ranked 16th in the world - 140 places above the former British number one. "I played really well and had a lot of fun out here today," said Watson, who beat 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin in qualifying to make the main draw. "I played a Grand Slam champion in the first round and that gave me a lot of confidence. That really helped. I knew the conditions and felt prepared for today." Watson joins compatriot Emma Raducanu (below) in the second round and will next face Spaniard Cristina Bucsa. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/06/19/80932177-13052995-image-a-28_1707249232737.jpg

Emma Raducanu crashes out of Abu Dhabi Open in last-16 after losing in straight sets to Ons Jabeur..by Matthew Lambert, Mail-Online.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/07/18/80979153-0-image-a-4_1707331452620.jpgEmma Raducanu showed signs of promise before being outgunned by Ons Jabeur in the second round of the Abu Dhabi Open. The former US Open champion had a fine win in the first round against world No26 Marie Bouzkova in her third tournament after nine months out recovering from wrist and ankle injuries. But No2 seed and two-time Wimbledon finalist Jabeur was a class above, hitting 35 winners and just 11 unforced errors to win 6-4, 6-1. But her 21-year-old opponent was impressive in coming back from 5-1 down in the first set, saving four set points. Serving in the first game of the match Raducanu took a 40-15 lead but missed two routine put-aways to be dragged back to deuce, and conceded the break with a huge double fault. Frustratingly for the British player it was that game which ultimately proved the difference in a 6-4 first set. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/07/18/80979129-0-image-a-5_1707331458558.jpgJabeur is known for her magic box of drop shots and slices but it was the flat power of her slapped forehand that did the bulk of the damage. ‘She didn’t make it easy for me,’ said the 29-year-old Tunisian after the match. ‘I’m a big fan of Emma and I know she can play better.’ Raducanu has now lost in the second round in five of her last eight tournaments. Though at opposite poles of their careers, she has been similar to Andy Murray over the last couple of years in terms of struggling to string results together. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/02/07/18/80979127-0-image-a-6_1707331509411.jpg

Transylvania Open: Harriet Dart into quarter-finals and heading back into WTA top 100..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/06/29/16/59676297-0-image-m-2_1656517358930.jpgHarriet Dart is set to return to the world's top 100 after she defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto to reach the Transylvania Open quarter-finals. The British number three fought back from a set down to clinch a 5-7 7-5 6-3 victory over the fifth seed in Cluj. Dart, who came through qualifying for the WTA Tour event, entered the week in 103rd spot but will move up after a slide down the rankings last year. The 27-year-old faces unseeded Spaniard Nuria Parrizas Diaz in the last eight. Dart's victory over Cocciaretto in Romania was the fifth time she had made the last eight of a WTA Tour event. However, it was first time she had done so away from British grass, with her last such run coming in Birmingham last summer. Dart had looked in trouble against the 23-year-old Italian when she was unable to take three set points at 5-4 in the opener, and then lost six games in a row. But she managed to claw her way back into the second set before she took her chances in the decider despite an injury timeout to treat a neck problem. "I had some set points in the first set, wasn't able to convert, but I thought she played good on the big points," Dart said after her win over the world number 56. "It's such small margins in tennis. There's always a chance and you just have to keep fighting. I got a small bit of a chance and I was able to take it. "I'm just trying to build on each match. It's been great to get lots of matches through the qualifying here, get used to the [hardcourt] surface."
