Katie Boulter beats Marta Kostyuk to win San Diego Open title..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/11/ee408fb1-36f8-4617-afb0-17280a68fa5f.jpgKatie Boulter won her first WTA 500 title by fighting back from a set down to defeat Marta Kostyuk in the San Diego Open final. The 27-year-old Briton won 5-7 6-2 6-2 in the biggest triumph of her career so far. After a close first set, Boulter dominated Ukrainian Kostyuk to secure a victory that lifts her to a career-high ranking of 27th in the world. "I don't know what just happened," Boulter said after the match. "This week has been very, very special for so many different reasons. This one is pretty amazing, I've worked very hard for it, I played some incredible tennis all week. "Today was a complete battle, with myself as well, because I was a little bit nervous. But I managed to get over the line, and that I'm very proud of." Boulter converted seven of her 11 break points and also saved seven of the 11 that she faced. She recovered from 5-2 down in the first set to get back to 5-5, saving five set points in the process, but Kostyuk took the opener when the Briton double-faulted. Boulter found her form and dominated from that point, breaking Kostyuk three times in the second set to force a decider. In the final set, she broke serve twice more and served out the match by hitting her first two aces of the match and a forehand winner on championship point. Boulter was greeted by her boyfriend, Australian player Alex de Minaur, who flew from Acapulco early in the morning after retaining his title at the Mexican Open on Saturday. "I want to say a small special thank you to my boyfriend," Boulter added. "He finished last night at midnight and I really want to embarrass him. He got on a 4.15 taxi this morning and six o'clock flight to be here today, so I do appreciate it." Boulter's only other WTA Tour was won at last year's Nottingham Open, a WTA 250 event. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/11/11/ded71ae1-00c3-4ba4-b42a-99cf390fc11d.jpgAnalysis by BBC tennis correspondent Russell FullerOutstanding grass-court results for British players in summer have not always translated into year-round success on tour. But Katie Boulter has built impressively on the platform of winning the Nottingham Open in June. Consistent performances on the WTA Tour pushed her ranking into the world's top 50, and now she has been able to string together a hugely impressive run of victories in San Diego. While Boulter did not need to beat anyone inside the top 130 to win the title in Nottingham, she saw off five top-40 players to triumph in San Diego. She played aggressively and daringly, and as a new member of the world's top 30 is on track to be seeded for the next Grand Slam tournament, at Roland Garros in Paris, in May.

Emma Raducanu: Briton 'not too concerned' about tournament results..By Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent.static.independent.co.uk/2022/04/29/19/526e3ef1bf1cf1a61b49898dbf106065Y29udGVudHNlYXJjaGFwaSwxNjUxMzQxMjc0-2.66506235.jpgEmma Raducanu says she is "not too concerned" about tournament results, as the priority this year is to develop her game. The 21-year-old has won three matches in the four tournaments she has played since returning from an eight-month absence from the tour through injury. She will play qualifier Rebeka Masarova in the first round at Indian Wells on Thursday. "I want to work on becoming a better tennis player," Raducanu said. "I think for me I'm not too concerned about this year's tournaments. "A lot of people out there would say that I need matches, but I think that for me I want to work on my game and development. "Taking time to do that is very necessary and not just following the crowd, or playing a lot of matches, or dropping down [to Challenger level] to do that. I want to work on developing skills," she told BBC Sport in Southern California. Raducanu played her best tennis of 2023 in Indian Wells, reaching the fourth round having found out just before the tournament began that she was likely to need surgery on both her wrists. "It's just a bit of a journey for me, I would say, you don't really know what to expect after being out for eight months," she continued. "I felt like because I was so go-go-go since December, I felt like I became a little fatigued, so it was good to go back, freshen up and practise for the American swing, which I'm a big fan of." Raducanu also told BBC Sport she is likely to play in Great Britain's Billie Jean King Cup qualifying tie in France in April, if selected by captain Anne Keothavong. "I don't know if I'll get the call-up," she said. "But if she asks me to, I think it makes sense because it's before [the WTA tournament in] Stuttgart [which is also] on indoor clay."

The Queen's Club set to host pre-Wimbledon women's event for first time since 1973..By Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent.ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/B9E0/production/_130148574_gettyimages-1258815201.jpgThe Queen's Club is poised to stage a pre-Wimbledon tournament for women for the first time since 1973. If plans are approved, a WTA tournament will be held the week after the French Open in June, on grass courts which will be used by men the following week. Although no final decision has been made, the LTA and The All England Club are keen to bring a WTA event back to London after more than half a century. The WTA will need to sanction the new tournament, which could start in 2025. It is expected to replace Eastbourne as the sole WTA 500 event staged in the UK in the run up to Wimbledon. Eastbourne will remain in its traditional place, in the week before Wimbledon, but is likely to be downgraded to WTA 250 status. This means fewer ranking points will be awarded, and prize money could potentially fall. The idea has stemmed from a year-long review of the grass court season, which has also been looking at new ways of maximising the impact of those summer weeks. If all parties can be persuaded, the new schedule should appear in the 2025 WTA calendar, which is expected to be published in April. Margaret Court, Chris Evert and Ann Jones all won the women's title at Queen's before the event ended in 1973. It is felt a return to Queen's would boost the visibility and profile of the women's game. Attracting a field of appropriate quality may prove challenging, however, as many top players prefer not to enter a tournament in the week after a Grand Slam: in this case in anticipation of a deep run on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Last year, for example, just five top-20 players contested the WTA tournaments in s-Hertogenbosch and Nottingham in the week after the French Open. Ticket prices may well need to be significantly lower than the hefty sums associated with the men's event. But with the stands going up for the men, and a number of commercial partners already supporting the ATP tournament, the LTA will hope this is also an opportunity to increase revenue. The courts at The Queen's Club will be put under unprecedented strain, although research carried out for the LTA and the All England Club suggests a week of women's matches causes less stress to grass than a similar load of men's matches. The women will get first use of the new courts, although some of the men may prefer the harder and less slippery courts they will inherit. The future of the WTA events in Nottingham and Birmingham is not yet clear. There is no scope for an extra UK grass-court event, so it appears as if one of the two will cease to stage a WTA tournament. Nottingham has traditionally been the venue in the week reserved for the new Queen's Club tournament. The Edgbaston Priory Club has been staging a tournament in the second week of the grass court season since 1982, but the event has consistently failed to break even. It remains to be seen whether the playing field at Eastbourne, which last year featured five of the world's top 10, will be affected by the tournament being downgraded to a WTA 250. There will be fewer ranking points on offer than at the week's other tournament in the German town of Bad Homburg, but many of those who do still want to play in the week before Wimbledon may prefer the shorter journey to The All England Club from the south coast of England. "The LTA and the All England Club have been reviewing the grass court season with the intention of improving the experience for fans and players," the LTA said in a statement. "We continue to discuss the future grass court calendar with the ATP and WTA, however, at the moment no final decisions have been taken."

Indian Wells: Emma Raducanu earns first-round win against Rebeka Masarova..www.reuters.com/resizer/hSLse-qkjdLv5hF59c4YWk6qU6s=/960x0/filters:quality(80)/cloudfront-us-east-2.images.arcpublishing.com/reuters/WV6O2XVCANORPK6GFYFGUWKFEA.jpgEmma Raducanu earned a 6-2 6-3 win against qualifier Rebeka Masarova in the first round at Indian Wells. The 21-year-old Briton broke the Spaniard's serve twice to go 3-0 up, but a third double fault from Raducanu allowed Masarova to pull a game back. Raducanu went 0-40 down when 5-2 in front but recovered to serve out for the first set in 43 minutes. She struggled on her serve at times but won the second set to book a meeting with Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska. Raducanu served eight double faults and had a first serve percentage of 51.9%, but the 21-year-old was helped by some impressive ground strokes and a number of errors from Masarova, who is 96 in the world. "It was super important for me to get through that," said Raducanu, whose ranking has dropped to 250 an eight-month absence from the tour through injury. "It's one of the trickiest tournaments conditions-wise to play in because it varies so much. "I dealt with that really well and overcame a really tough opponent." Raducanu, who reached the fourth round at Indian Wells last year, needed four match points to beat Masarova and set up the second-round tie against Yastremska, who is ranked 31st in the world. "Tennis, I think, is one of the toughest sports out there about focusing, refocusing," she added. "Momentum shifts and the scoring system are pretty brutal so I was really pleased how I stayed really focused and didn't get down and competed really, really hard in tough situations."

Indian Wells: Andy Murray beats David Goffin to reach second round..firstsportz.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/03/Andy-Murray-of-Britain-reacts-to-defeating-David-Goffin-of-Belgium-at-the-BNP-Paribas-Open-tennis-tournament.jpgBritain's Andy Murray claimed a straight-set win over David Goffin to reach the second round of Indian Wells. The three-time Grand Slam champion, 36, revealed at last month's Dubai Tennis Championships he is not planning to "play much past this summer". In his first match since then, Murray raced to a routine 6-3 6-2 victory against the Belgian qualifier. Murray's future has come under increased scrutiny after struggling for wins in recent months, winning just two of his eight matches before Indian Wells. However, the former world number one looked in good form as he sent down two aces to seal a 34-minute opening set against Goffin. Murray took an early advantage in the second set and broke again to go 5-2 up and serve out the win with an ace. He will next face Russian fifth seed Andrey Rublev. "That's the best I've served here," said Murray, who is making his 16th appearance at Indian Wells. "I've always struggled serving, certainly the last 10 years or so, when I've been here for whatever reason." Murray told BBC Sport: "The conditions here this year definitely help. It's not the same as it has been for the most part of my career here - it's significantly faster than before, which I like. I wish it had been like that for the past 15 years or so."

Indian Wells: Emma Raducanu into round three as Dayana Yastremska retires..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/09/22/82263469-0-image-a-80_1710024026819.jpgBriton Emma Raducanu is through to round three at Indian Wells after opponent Dayana Yastremska retired with illness in the opening set. Raducanu, 21, raced into a 4-0 lead in just 18 minutes during the first set. Ukrainian Yastremska stepped to the back of the court between games, holding her stomach and then retiring from the contest after being assessed by the medics. Raducanu will next face world number two Aryna Sabalenka, 25. The Belarusian, who successfully defended her Australian Open in January, fought back against American Peyton Stearns and survived a third set tiebreak to win 6-7 (2-7) 6-2 7-6 (8-6). Asked about Yastremska's illness, Raducanu said: "I had zero idea to be honest. It surprised me, I was just trying to focus on my side of the court as much as possible and I did that well from the start. "I played pretty clean for four games and I just feel bad for Dayana because she's been through a lot and I just hate seeing people injured. I really empathise with her. I've been through both injury and illness and it completely sucks - it's the worst thing that can happen to you as an athlete." Wild card Raducanu broke Yastremska's serve in the opening game with a well-placed drop shot and then dug in to save a break point during her first service game. A strong backhand sealed a second break before Raducanu comfortably held in the fourth game. Yastremska also retired with an injury during her only other meeting with Raducanu at Portoroz in Slovenia in 2022. It is the first time Raducanu has registered successive victories since she won three in a row to reach the fourth round at Indian Wells in March 2023.

Indian Wells: Cameron Norrie beats Lorenzo Sonego to reach round three..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/03/17/07/55464025-10622493-image-a-1_1647501573171.jpgBritish number one Cameron Norrie beat Lorenzo Sonego 6-4 6-4 to reach round three at Indian Wells. Norrie, 28, enjoyed a straightforward opening set, breaking Italy's Sonego once and holding on to his own service games to win it. He broke twice in the second set to lead 5-2 but Sonego, also 28, fought back to win two games before Norrie served out for the win. Norrie, the 28th seed, will next face Gael Monfils after the French veteran beat the eighth seed, Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, 6-0 6-7 (5-7) 6-2. This is Norrie's first tournament since he lost in straight sets to Argentine qualifier Mariano Navone in the semi-finals of the ATP Rio Open on 25 February. Norrie, who won the tournament at Indian Wells in 2021, struggled with the hot and humid conditions in Rio and has been recovering from illness over the past few weeks. "I got sick at the end of Rio so I haven't been able to practise too much," Norrie told Sky Sports after his win against Sonego. "I've been trying to recover and that's why I was happy to be out here. I just need to build back again for Miami and all these matches to try to improve. It's not easy but you take it for granted sometimes when you're not feeling well. "It's good memories coming here again. I like the courts and facilities. It's always positive memories and I enjoy coming here year after year."

Indian Wells: Andy Murray beaten in straight sets by Andrey Rublev..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/09/00/82242097-0-image-a-53_1709943064963.jpgBritain's Andy Murray fell to a straight-set defeat against Russian fifth seed Andrey Rublev in the third round at Indian Wells. Three-time Grand Slam champion Murray, 36, was beaten 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 by Rublev in a high-quality match in California. Murray, who has said he is not planning to "play much past this summer" as he considers retirement, missed four set points when leading the first set 5-4. He then quickly faded in the second after losing serve in the fourth game. Murray, who finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the tournament in 2009, thanked the Indian Wells crowd on what he acknowledged would be his final visit. "I've loved coming to this place over the years," he said, praising the support from fans which had allowed him "to play in some amazing atmospheres and create brilliant memories - because without them it's not the same". Elsewhere, Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner progressed with a straight-set victory over Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis. The Italian world number three, 22, took just 81 minutes to seal a 6-3 6-0 win and will play German Jan-Lennard Struff or Croatia's Borna Coric in the third round. Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, the second seed, dropped the first set against Italy's Matteo Arnaldi but the Spaniard recovered to win 6-7 (7-5) 6-0 6-1. German sixth seed Alexander Zverev won 6-4 6-4 against Australia's Christopher O'Connell, while Greek 11th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated French qualifier Lucas Pouille 6-3 6-2. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/09/00/82242099-0-image-a-55_1709943075577.jpgMurray falls away after strong startHaving claimed a straight-set win over David Goffin to reach the second round, Murray delighted the Indian Wells crowd in a high-quality opening set against Rublev and a stunning backhand passing shot on a crucial point allowed him to hold serve for a 5-4 lead. It looked as though that may prove pivotal as he maintained momentum to create a total of four set points in the following game. But Rublev hung on, forcing a tie-break which he would clinch at the second opportunity, to leave Murray empty-handed despite a promising display in a 66-minute first set. Well supported on court two, Murray continued to display flashes of brilliance and beat Rublev with a perfectly executed lob as the players fought for an advantage in the second set. But, first to face pressure points in a service game he had led 40-0, Murray could not withstand a third break point as Rublev moved 3-1 ahead. The 26-year-old Rublev, who won an appeal after being defaulted from last week's Dubai Tennis Championships, would not let up from there - breaking Murray again before eventually taking his fourth match point. Former world number one Murray has said he hopes to compete at another Olympic Games before he retires, but to achieve that he must be inside the top 56 of the ATP rankings on 10 June. The two-time Olympic champion, who turns 37 in May, is currently ranked 61st and won just two of his eight matches in the lead-up to Indian Wells.

Indian Wells: Britain's Cameron Norrie loses to Gael Monfils in third round..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2021/10/26/16/49661099-10132735-image-a-38_1635260577971.jpgBritish number one Cameron Norrie suffered a third-round loss to Frenchman Gael Monfils after a gruelling three sets at Indian Wells. Former champion Norrie, 28, took the first set in a tie-break but eventually fell to a 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 defeat after more than three hours. Monfils, 37, has now won all four matches he has played against Norrie. He will face Norwegian ninth seed Casper Ruud or French teenager Arthur Fils for a place in the quarter-finals. Norrie, who struggled with illness following his previous tournament in Rio in late February, made a dominant start and broke his opponents' serve in the opening game on his sixth break point. But he failed to take any of his nine break points in Monfils' second game, and the world number 54 responded to level the set at 3-3. Monfils - who saved 18 of the 20 break points he faced in the first set - ensured another twist as he broke back for a second time with Norrie serving for the set, but it was the Briton who eventually prevailed in a fittingly unpredictable tie-break. Norrie repeated his fast start with an early break of serve to establish a 3-0 advantage in the second set, but Monfils again battled back to force a tie-break - this time edging it to force a decider. And it was Monfils who struck the decisive blow eight games into the third set before serving out the match to love to complete an epic comeback after three hours and 12 minutes. "It was pretty gutting to lose it having so many chances," said Norrie. "But I think looking back, five or six days ago I probably wasn't even going to play the tournament so it's nice to be feeling healthy again. "I actually felt good out there. Physically in the third set I was not as good as the start of the match, and I think it was a small difference."

Indian Wells: Britain's Emma Raducanu beaten by second seed Aryna Sabalenka..
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/12/07/82349941-0-image-a-16_1710227974202.jpg Emma Raducanu lost in straight sets against Aryna Sabalenka at Indian WellsBritain's Emma Raducanu was beaten in straight sets by Belarusian world number two Aryna Sabalenka in the third round at Indian Wells. Raducanu, who reached the fourth round in California last year, lost 6-3 7-5 to two-time major winner Sabalenka as she continues her comeback. The 21-year-old, ranked 250 in the world, was a wildcard at the tournament following an injury-disrupted 2023. "It was a good success, I would say," Raducanu said of her week. "I think I have handled myself a lot better on the match court. I was a lot more positive and hungry to play, and that showed I think in the tennis that I did play." Raducanu's second-round victory over Dayana Yastremska, who retired with illness, was the first time the English player had recorded back-to-back wins since successfully coming through three in a row at Indian Wells 12 months ago. The shock 2021 US Open champion made her return to the tour in January following an eight-month absence, during which she had operations on both of her wrists and surgery on her ankle. She said she was "not too concerned" about recent results - having won just three matches in the four tournaments she had played before Indian Wells - as the priority this year is to develop her game. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/12/07/82349991-0-image-a-17_1710228049807.jpg Raducanu pushed the world No 2 all the way, battling back from a break down to level at 5-5 in the second setTesting herself against Sabalenka, who successfully defended her Australian Open title in January, Raducanu will be pleased with the progress she showed. A single break of serve in the sixth game was enough for Sabalenka to take the first set, but only after Raducanu dismissed two set points on serve before putting her opponent under pressure with three break points as she served for the set. Sabalenka moved a step closer to victory by claiming the first break five games into set two. Raducanu produced an immediate response to stay in contention and continued to trouble the second seed by creating a break point after holding serve to lead 4-3. Sabalenka struck what proved to be the decisive blow when she broke for a 6-5 lead, eventually serving out the contest with her fourth match point after Raducanu again missed three break points as she fought hard until the end.

Indian Wells: Novak Djokovic knocked out by lucky loser Luca Nardi..
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/12/05/82347683-13185909-image-m-18_1710219891182.jpg Italy's Luca Nardi orchestrated a thrilling upset in straight sets against Novak Djokovic in Cali.World number one Novak Djokovic was beaten by 20-year-old lucky loser Luca Nardi in round three at Indian Wells. Italian Nardi, ranked 123 in the world, had originally been knocked out in qualifying but reached the main draw after another player's withdrawal. He hit 34 winners in a 6-4 3-6 6-3 win over the 24-time Grand Slam champion, converting match point with an ace. "It's crazy," said Nardi, the lowest-ranked player to beat Djokovic at ATP Masters 1,000 or Grand Slam level. "I don't know [how I held my nerve], I think it is a miracle, because I am a 20-year-old guy, and beating Novak." Djokovic, 36, who was beaten by eventual winner Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the Australian Open, is yet to win a tournament this year. "No titles this year. That's not something I'm used to," said the Serb, who hit 17 winners but made nine unforced errors. "I was starting the season most of my career with a Grand Slam win or Dubai win. It's fine. It's part of the sport. You just have to accept it. Some you win, some you lose. "Hopefully I'll win some more and still keep going. I guess every trophy that eventually comes my way is going to be great, to break the kind of negative cycle a little bit I'm having in the last three, four tournaments where I haven't really been close to my best." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/12/04/82347877-13185909-image-a-3_1710219299523.jpgTennis' No. 1 was stunned after his three set loss in the third round to Nardi, who ranks No. 123Nardi, who was beaten by Belgium's David Goffin in the final round of qualifying, said it was an "amazing feeling". "I couldn't even imagine to play a match against him, and now I also beat him," he added. "It's such a dream come true for me. After the match, my coaches told me, Luca, everyone was cheering for you. Incredible. Against Djokovic, he's the best player ever. "I will keep it, this moment, for the rest of my life." Nardi will play Tommy Paul in the last 16, with the American progressing courtesy of a 6-4 6-4 win over France's Ugo Humbert.

Play is suspended at Indian Wells tennis tournament due to an invasion of BEES - world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz & his opponent Alexander Zverev forced to run for cover.

In remarkable scenes more reminiscent of a horror movie, thousands of bees descended on the main stadium in California, with play immediately suspended. An incredible photo shows the insects all over the 'spider cam' that glides across the court, with officials forced to raise the camera high above the stadium in a bid to take the bees with it. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/14/22/82488811-0-image-a-9_1710456334762.jpgA swarm of bees covers the TV providers' 'spider cam' during Carlos Alcaraz's quarterfinal Incredibly, one official was tasked with taking a vacuum up to the spider cam, where he could be seen sucking up the bees into his device. Quickly becoming a fans' favorite, he spent over an hour trying to rid the court of the insets - without wearing any protective equipment or beekeeping kit. The players remained off-court while the drama unfolded, and fans waited patiently in their seats for more information. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/15/00/82491039-13199357-image-a-1_1710461421545.jpg A beekeeper was tasked with taking a vacuum to the spider cam to rid the court of the insect

Billie Jean King Cup qualifying: Emma Raducanu named in Great Britain squad..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/02/13/79524245-12918213-The_British_superstar_has_fallen_down_the_rankings_after_being_o-a-19_1704201980401.jpgFormer US Open champion Emma Raducanu has been named in Great Britain's squad to face France in the qualifying round of the 2024 Billie Jean King Cup. Raducanu, 21, joins British number one Katie Boulter, Harriet Dart and Heather Watson in what captain Anne Keothavong says is a "full-strength team". France will host the tie from 12th-13th April after they beat Keothavong's team in Coventry last year. Keothavong insisted GB were "getting stronger and better". She told the LTA website, external: "I'm delighted to be travelling with a full-strength team off the back of some terrific results recently. "The French side will present a significant challenge as always, but we all know how representing GB inspires us." GB booked their place in this year's qualifiers with a 3-1 play-off win over Sweden in November. The winner of the best-of-five tie will progress to the Billie Jean King Cup Finals later this year, while the losing nation will compete in the play-offs. Great Britain and France have faced each other four times in the tournament's history, with both sides securing two victories each. Raducanu is continuing her comeback after an injury-hit 2023 season - her latest match ended in a straight-set defeat in the third round at Indian Wells on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Boulter, 27, won her first WTA 500 title earlier this month after coming from a set down to beat Marta Kostyuk in the San Diego Open final.

Aryna Sabalenka opponent Paula Badosa says match will be 'uncomfortable' after boyfriend's death..
i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/20/06/82671901-13217593-Paula_Badosa_admitted_it_will_be_uncomfortable_to_play_against_A-a-13_1710916993038.jpg Paula Badosa (left) admitted it will be 'uncomfortable' to play against Aryna Sabalenka Paula Badosa says it will be "uncomfortable" playing "best friend" Aryna Sabalenka this week, following the death of Sabalenka's boyfriend. Konstantin Koltsov, a former ice hockey player, died at the age of 42 in Miami on Monday in what police have described as an "apparent suicide". Sabalenka's boyfriend Konstantin Koltsov 'died of suicide' on Monday evening after jumping from a hotel balcony in Miami, police have confirmed. The 42-year-old Belarusian, was announced dead by his former club Salavat Yulaev Ufa on social messaging site Telegram on Tuesday. World number two Sabalenka is still set to play in the Miami Open this week and will meet Badosa in the second round. "It's a very tough situation," the Spaniard said, "Yesterday I spoke with her. This morning the same. "I know the entire situation, what is happening. "That for me is a little bit shocking also to go through that because at the end she's my best friend and I don't want her to suffer. It's a very tough situation." Koltsov represented Belarus at the 2002 and 2010 Winter Olympics and also spent three years in the NHL with the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Miami-Dade Police Department said "no foul play is suspected" following the announcement of his death. "Playing against her, it's also uncomfortable," Badosa, who beat Simona Halep on the Romanian's return after a doping ban on Tuesday, added. "But I don't really want to talk about it because I said I'm not going to talk about it. "She's my best friend and I promised that. She's a strong woman. I think she will get the power from somewhere. I hope it's going to be a battle, a good match." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/20/06/82656549-13217593-Police_have_confirmed_that_Koltsov_who_had_been_dating_the_Austr-a-6_1710916516283.jpgKoltsov had been dating the two-time Australian Open champion for three years since 2021

Emma Raducanu withdraws from Miami Open with lower back injury..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/01/02/13/59109667-12918213-Bank_HSBC_is_among_the_high_profile_brands_to_have_a_commercial_-a-21_1704201980403.jpgBritain's Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from the Miami Open with a lower back injury - but her management company say the issue is "nothing serious". The 21-year-old was due to face China's Wang Xiyu in the first round on Tuesday. However, she does not want to risk aggravating the injury by playing in the tournament in the United States. It is a blow to Raducanu's comeback following an injury-disrupted 2023 season. "I have been experiencing lower back pain and at this stage of my return to competition I don't want to risk anything happening," Raducanu said in a statement issued by tournament organisers. "I really tried my best to be ready and I'm sad to be pulling out of Miami as it's a cool tournament, but wish the event all the best." The 2021 US Open champion was beaten in straight sets by world number two Aryna Sabalenka in the third round at Indian Wells last week. It is not known whether the injury will impact Raducanu's selection in Great Britain's Billie Jean King Cup squad for their qualifying-round tie with France from 12-13 April. Before her defeat by two-time Australian Open winner Sabalenka, Raducanu had recorded back-to-back victories for the first time since winning three in a row at Indian Wells 12 months ago. She made her return to the tour in January following an eight-month absence, during which she had operations on both of her wrists and her left ankle. Now ranked 288th in the world, Raducanu - who was given a wildcard for the Miami Open - said earlier this month she was "not too concerned" about results as her focus this year is on developing her game.

Miami Open: Jack Draper beats Taro Daniel in first round..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2022/03/23/20/55718793-10645385-image-a-41_1648066888508.jpgBritish men's number two Jack Draper bounced back to form with an impressive display in the Miami Open first round. Draper, 22, lost in the Indian Wells first round earlier this month but started the second part of what is known as the 'Sunshine Double' with a 6-3 6-2 win over Japan's Taro Daniel. The powerful left-hander, ranked 42nd in the world, only dropped eight points on serve and broke Daniel three times. Draper will play Chile's Nicolas Jarry, seeded 22nd, in the second round. Draper's talent - characterised by a powerful serve and explosive forehand - has never been in doubt, but there have been constant concerns about his physical and mental durability. After reaching his first ATP final in Sofia at the end of last season, Draper started 2024 by finishing runner-up in Adelaide and recently reached the semi-finals of the Mexican Open. However, he was forced to retire through illness in Acapulco in the latest of several unfortunate setbacks over the course of his young career. The Miami Open is known for its difficult and humid conditions, but Draper - who headed straight to Florida following his early exit in California to acclimatise - showed no problems in an assured display against Daniel. Draper used his biggest weapons to great effect, hitting 10 aces as he won 97% of his first-serve points, and was able to keep the points short in a victory which took little over an hour. Next Draper will face Jarry, who received a first-round bye at the ATP Masters 1000 event, as he looks to go on a run which would help him surpass his previous career-best ranking of 37th in the world.

Miami Open: Andy Murray beats Matteo Berrettini..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32405456.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_Screenshot-2024-03-21-at-084016.jpgBritain's Andy Murray earned a much-needed win by beating former Wimbledon runner-up Matteo Berrettini - who almost fainted in the second set - in a tricky Miami Open first-round draw. Murray, 36, fought back to win 4-6 6-3 6-4 as Italy's Berrettini indicated he was struggling with dizziness. Murray, who plans to retire later this year, was able to earn only his fourth win in 11 matches this season. He wrote "life in the old dog yet" on a camera lens after sealing victory. British number four Murray, ranked 62nd in the world, will next face Argentine 29th seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who beat him in a subdued Australian Open first-round exit earlier this year. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32405486.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_Screenshot-2024-03-21-at-084000.jpgMurray's scrawled message on the television camera - which is customary for the winner - indicated his satisfaction at extending what is expected to be the two-time champion's final appearance in Miami. The former world number one, who turns 37 in May, recently said he does not "plan on playing much past the summer" when pressed about his retirement plans. Murray has been candid about his struggles in recent months and looked to be heading to another defeat against former world number six Berrettini, who was playing his first ATP Tour match in almost seven months. Berrettini, whose own career has been stalled by a succession of long-term injuries, demonstrated he has not lost his strong service game by landing 78% of his typically-hefty first serves in an impressive first set. Three-time major champion Murray, rarely one to roll over, improved considerably in the second set and turned the match around. More proactive in the points and making fewer unforced errors, the Scot was rewarded by taking his third break point of the game for a 4-2 lead. Then came a dramatic and concerning moment when Berrettini, serving to stay in the set at 5-2, wobbled as he was preparing to play. The 27-year-old needed treatment from a doctor for dizziness before being able to continue, but also took a long break off the court before the deciding set. With Berrettini still looking uncomfortable, Murray maintained his intensity to break at the fourth time of asking in a 12-minute opening game and it was enough to secure a much-needed success. His celebration was respectfully reserved given the circumstances and he made sure his first act was to ask Berrettini how he felt when they shook hands at the net.

Miami Open: Katie Boulter beats Brenda Fruhvirtova..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/22/00/82758611-13225345-image-a-16_1711068886652.jpgBritish number one Katie Boulter is through to the Miami Open third round after 16-year-old opponent Brenda Fruhvirtova was forced to retire through illness. Boulter, who has made a strong start to 2024, led the second-round match 7-6 (7-5) 1-0 when Fruhvirtova withdrew. The Czech player led by an early break but struggled in the Florida heat and twice asked to see a doctor. "To win like that, I'll take it but I want her to get better," said Boulter. Speaking to Sky Sports, she added. "Halfway through the match I'm seeing her coaches telling her to pull out and then she's not. "One minute she's struggling to put the ball in the court and the next she's running 10 shots side to side. It's a tough mental game." While it was not the way Boulter wanted to progress, the 27-year-old will take positives from the way she maintained focus in the difficult circumstances. Ultimately, she will be relieved to earn her first victory at the Miami Open, which is a WTA 1000 event and one of the biggest outside the Grand Slams. It was far from Boulter's best performance, falling short of the level which helped her win the biggest title of her career at the San Diego Open last month and climb to a career-high ranking of 27th in the world. Fruhvirtova was a break up in the first set and playing confidently as Boulter - who lost in the Indian Wells first round just days after her San Diego triumph - was unable to find range with her aggressive shot-making. But momentum shifted when the teenager needed to see a doctor before she was about to serve for the set at 5-4. Boulter tried to up the intensity and lengthen the points, further sapping Fruhvirtova's energy levels. Boulter broke back for 5-5 and went on to win the tie-break, then took the serve of Fruhvirtova - whose execution of her shots was increasingly erratic - again at the start of the second set. Fruhvirtova, who is regarded as one of the most exciting talents on the WTA Tour, asked to see the doctor again before conceding the match. "For me it was challenging and I wasn't the kindest to myself but we live and learn," added 24th seed Boulter, who received a first-round bye and plays Brazilian 11th seed Beatriz Haddad Maia in the last 32. "There is a lot to improve on but I'll take it."

Miami Open: Andy Murray beats Tomas Martin Etcheverry to reach third round..i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32182047.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_GettyImages-2020533961.jpgAndy Murray gained a measure of revenge against Tomas Martin Etcheverry by beating the Argentine in the second round of the Miami Open. Etcheverry had beaten the Briton in the first round of the Australian Open earlier this year, but Murray won 7-6 (7-0) 6-3 this time around. The match resumed at 3-3 after being suspended because of rain on Friday. Murray convincingly won a first set tie-break before one break in the second was enough to secure victory. The 36-year-old produced a delightful backhand cross-court lob on the way to breaking Etcheverry in the sixth game of the second set. Murray survived a break point in the next game and went 5-2 up with a hat-trick of aces. Serving for the set, Murray was 0-40 down before getting to deuce with a backhand that just caught the line. He then secured victory in two hours 16 minutes when Etcheverry, ranked 30th in the world, sent a forehand long and wide on match point. Overall, Murray served 10 aces, hit 28 winners compared to 17 from his opponent, and saved seven of seven break points. He will play Tomas Machac, who is 60th in the men's rankings, of the Czech Republic in the last 32. Murray is a two-time champion of the tournament but this is expected to be his final appearance in Miami as he plans to retire later this year.

Miami Open: Andy Murray in dramatic three-set defeat by Tomas Machac..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/03/09/00/82242099-0-image-a-55_1709943075577.jpgAndy Murray was knocked out of the Miami Open in a dramatic 5-7 7-5 7-6 (7-5) last-32 defeat by Tomas Machac. The Briton, 36, converted his ninth break point to take a 6-5 lead in the opening set before serving out to love. But Machac hit back to win the second set and then clinched the match in a third-set tie-break, having previously been broken when serving to progress. Murray received treatment on an ankle injury late in the third set and was also agitated by movement in the crowd. Murray's match against 23-year-old Czech Republic player Machac lasted three hours and 27 minutes and saw him save match point to force a tie-break. After the Briton secured the opening set, Machac broke Murray for the first time at 6-5 in the second set - which was interrupted by a brief rain delay - to draw level. But Murray's frustration grew with people in the crowd moving and umpire Carlos Bernardes at the end of that set. In response to an unheard reply from Bernardes to Murray's "useless, useless" comment, the Scot responded: "What are you talking about? It's quite obvious when people are standing up between every single point." Machac raced into a 3-0 lead in the decider, but Murray retrieved a break and saved match point when serving to stay in the match before succumbing to defeat when he lost the tie-break. He had worryingly gone down with an ankle injury at the net after hitting the winner to level at 5-5 in the third set. He received treatment from the physio and managed to continue but could not overcome a resolute Machac, who was ranked two places lower than the then 58th-placed Murray.
