(maybe mods may think about merging with Portsmouth away thread?)
Well......probably to date, our biggest away day match to contemplate.
We really should be proud we're here. So much accomplished in two years since we last met (which although was a fair result, even though we were harshly punished because of lack of right back position). We can rightly, credibly and justifiably claim to be promotion rivals, even though somewhat uncommonly, we are considered underdogs by size and history..
Anyways, my own (select) memories select an Isle of Wight stay with last game season lose. That wasn't even half the story.......if you were in the the Shepherd pub singing, with a home fan/away fan line separation with old bill outside, then you'll know what I mean.
I stood on the same terraces that are now so thinly disguised as seating.
Yep, they have fans. So have we.. Yep, they turn up in numbers. So do we.. Yep they're passionate. So are we..
We both dislike red and white. We both dislike larger and more recently successful bland rivals.
Much respect to Pompey for pulling out the stops when things got bad for them financially, we've been in a dark place too. I hope we both get out this god awful division the right way..
Safe journey all Gas.

As was mentioned on an earlier thread, I was at the game where the 'one little fat one' chant was directed at a copper. Other than that my abiding memories of going to Fratton, is that we always lose- I'm pretty sure in 5/6 visits, I have never seen us come back with anything from a game- and that there was always trouble in the late 70s/early 80s down there. Oh and watching from the stands - possibly a boxing day game- with well known local footballer Johnny 'Elbows' Jenkins, we were both taken with the really impressive performance of the young Pompey winger Darren Anderton. Arguably he never reached his full potential, but he was absolutely outstanding that day.

I haven't been there since I was a lad but am going on Saturday.
I remember getting verbal's from Pompey fans of a similar teen age for having the audacity to wear my Rovers shirt.
They will all be grown up now as well, and with (god forbid) children of their own.
Quite unpleasant individuals and not a lot has changed so I hear...

all sold out, top banana! Bristol Rovers are delighted to announce that tickets for this weekend's game with Portsmouth are now sold out. The club would like the thank the supporters for selling out our full allocation of 2,860 tickets. Darrell Clarke's side travel to Fratton Park this Saturday (13th February) and the team is expecting a very vocal presence from all you Gasheads. www.bristolrovers.co.uk/news/article/portsmouth-tickets-now-sold-out-2949806.aspx?

Was also at the one little fat one game, and remember the train journey there with David Williams on the train. We seemed to be overawed by the setting and it was only a matter of time before they scored through Alan Biley who always seemed to score against us (though my memory might be playing tricks here). We never looked like getting anything out the game if I recall correctly. The home game that year was much more memorable - we absolutely tonked them 5-1 with 5 different players on the score sheet. Could have been many more too, and this was in the middle of a spell of home games where we put at least 4 goals on our opponents. I remember our home form being absolutley terrific that season.

Any recommendations for parking near the ground ? Is there street parking available, car parks etc ? Loads of back street parking around Milton end of ground if arrive early enough. Plenty of roads and a play park, pubs and bookies.. I think there is a car park. But it's situated for home fans convenience..

We are in the one near the ferry port. There are about 100 spaces, so if you are staying there, you should be fine. I am with some Pompey fans.:-(

On Sky site Ollie predicts:
Portsmouth v Bristol Rovers, League Two, Saturday 3pm
Go on the Gas! This looks a great time to visit Fratton Park as Pompey have won just four of last 15 league games. The job Darrell Clarke is doing at Rovers is phenomenal. I'm so proud of everyone at the club - keep it going!
OLLIE PREDICTS: 1-2

He looked dreadful when in the Millwall job.

Safe journey all Gas. Think I went twice in the early 90s, and I've got a feeling we lost both, and something is telling me they were both Boxing Day. One of those trips would have been with a mini-bus full from Bath, that I went with to a few away games around that time. Most of them from Oldfield Park and would go back to The Victoria pub afterwards. Can't remember much: dodgy pub over the road before the match; walking past that old-(ish) building on the corner of the ground; crumbling open terrace; bit of a crush getting in and out; "Play Up Pompey" being sang, and the bloke in the bell-bottomed RN uniform, parading around with a placard bearing "Play Up Pompey". Brave lad,, took a lot of stick, I wonder if they still have someone doing that?
