Northampton have the right set up to stay in league 2 or 1, three guys over 6'2" in the back four who can head the ball to the half way line. Hoof ball or going wide and crossing, as we played yesterday, will rarely work as there are no afters to pick up on the edge of the area. You need to run at them with pace, you're bound to lose the ball sometimes, but in that way you can beat them or get fouled.

Taylor scored 20 goals last season, so I quite like his conversion rate at the moment. You can so anything you like with statistics. Agree, Taylor misses more than he scores, but he Drs score sublime goals and his all round play and footballing vision should be valued too. Yea, he missed a chance today. So did Ellis. Hardly mentioned. Give the guy a break ffs.. If you're talking about the one where Harrison got on the end of a ball in the box then he did have a shot but the goalkeeper was on it. It was athletic that he got his toe onto the ball. Taylor had the goal at his mercy but tried to get the ball onto his right foot. I can't understand why he didn't just side foot it in. That was a gilt edged chance that most park players could have scored and was nothing like Harrison's effort |

Taylor scored sublime round-the-keeper and score with left away to FGR. An arguably easier chance yesterday and he fluffed (to keep in with Ron Jeremy theme) it. The point was trying to make is Ellis missed a chance too, but received disproportionate scrutiny. I like both players, hope they both acclimatise to the division quickly. |

That is a really good attendance for the first match of the season, it's a good 1,500 above what I would have expected. And probably that many less for our next home league game. Disappointing from too many having a poor game and presumably not playing to game plan. This was probably caused by Northampton playing high up the pitch and giving us no space to play causing us to lump the ball forward mostly inaccurately to our two small strikers. We have to learn quickly, lets give Darrell a chance to sort it out, after all that's what he's paid for...... |

Having said that, most of the grabbing, pushing, puling, would have been penalised in rugby.
I've read elsewhere of people impressed by Cresswell - he might have won his headers, but he frequently sliced his clearances, and came out on top in his tussles as the referee let him get away with everything.
It was ironic that the only yellow card they picked up was when Sincs ran into the fullback and threw himself to the ground. Just when you thought we'd escaped the rubbish referees ...
We might have missed two one-on-ones, but I can't take the victory away from NTFC : far more shots than us, and corners - our only one came in stoppage time.

... mean't to add that I was disappointed with the wingers. Having seen Montano in pre-season games I thought he'd tear tier 4 defences apart with his pace. Sadly it didn't happen yesterday, then Monakana came on and trod on the ball in his own penalty area with his first touch.
Early days though! :-D

Remember when Ellis Harrison went through on goal 1on1 and missed? Can we have two pages of dissecting that one now please? Ellis isn't the first name on the team sheet and he doesn't miss simple chances in just about every game. If Ellis was played in Taylor's position and started every game and was the penalty taker he would out-score Taylor easily. |

bad miss by taylor today but very clever play to anticipate the back pass,i doubt any of our other forwards would have taken up that position. still a bad miss but i still think he can do well and score goals this season. not anticipation on Taylor's part -he was just slow in coming back - watch this aspect of his game in future - he is always slow in coming back after an attack breaks down. However, he does have to do a lot of chasing for the long ball forward. |

Still an absolute disgrace of a player to himself our club last season and the so called profession as a whole, if you think DC should be held responsible for the shambles that run since 2006 then may i suggest a visit to the doctor. 1 game, 1 game ffs and the knives are out already, absolutely pathetic and a very sad sign of the times, some fans have no idea whatsoever, yet Higgs continues to run the club into the ground totally unchallenged, sometimes i think i live in the fecking twilight zone as very little makes sense when it comes to praise and criticisms at this club. I agree. We just scrape out of a division filled with park players and people think that a manager who had all the cards stacked in his favour is doing well. Too early obviously to have any idea how this season will go, but today's performance, tactics and inability to change as the game progressed was worrying. Still, we were pants on the first day of last season and got promoted. We got turned over 4-1 on the first day of the 2006~07 season, and that turned out OK. You seem to have overlooked the fact that DC rewrote the club history books when it came to unbeaten runs, only one automatic promotion from a league that many other ex league clubs have found impossible to get out of, DC is the best thing that has happened in the pas decades, yet with the lack of brain cells on offer among the vocal sorts two or three defeats will see the Faithfull and true fans turn on him while Higgs sails the club firmly towards administration completely unchallenged. What's that we'll used phrase? 'Only at Rovers'. |
