once upon time, younger viewers, there weren’t any subs, and for many years just 1! Getting subs right is very much a part of the modern game, that great managers of the past never knew. What I think it means when you have so many subs to play with, is you can change formation. Or react well to your opponents changes, better than you could in days of less subs. So it favours thinking on the feet tactics?
as he is making these changes we were all thinking, what is this doing to the formation and tactic, that didn’t seem broken enough to tweak? Yet to be fair to Barton there isn’t a do nothing option, if your opponents are looking for overload and Chuck kitchen sink in, you have to respond somehow?
But Joey tonight left all the over thirties on till final whistle? there wasn’t a fresh runner as out ball to halt the relentless pressure, it was whipper snappers hauled off. So not like for like subs, or fresh legs for the Bathchair Midfield Generals. And as for the knew shape to see the game out, does anyone know for sure what it was, back five with wingbacks? We ended up with a defacto team that started the first half so woefully on Saturday. Lessons haven't been learned. I take your point about subs being used or over used, but it begs a question of if wasn't broken, why fix it? .... and if you're going to try to fix it, why fix it with something as broken as a first half shambles capitulation v Bradford?? It's 2 points thrown away. Positives though: 60 mins of sometimes inspiring football. Alfie getting forward to present clear chance open play opportunity on goal (I ask again, when have we had a central defender so versatile?). Harries until his sending off again taking booking for the team and some brilliant blocking. Slow in possession though. Luke Thomas again growing into the game. Another Evans assist and looked great passing throughout. Whelan getting stuck in. Taylor getting his head on everything. Pitman doing what he does best and unlucky, he could have had a hat trick tonight if luck had been on his side. Much to be pleased about. Best we've played for ages. Whelan was outstanding. Pitman, finally fed chances. Collins ran his backside off. Evans, Thomas and Nicholson took the pi*s at times. A shame we didn't get all 3 pts but I watched on ifollow and was thoroughly entertained. Belshaw made 2 great saves. Poor decisions made, especially from Harries. I would suggest they appeal the Clarke one. Even the Harries one was harsh. But Colchester did to us what we did to Bradford. Credit to them for earning a point in a game where they were second best.

Totally. Out of interest, does former Newport boss Mike Flynn have a new job yet? I don’t think he has. He was sacked when he had Covid? Pre season favourites sacked manager when 15th. Not all clubs do that, some see building on stability the best way out this league. Like ours. 😐 Bradford beaten at home by Pool tonight. He wasn't sacked, he stood down. It looks like he has a position lined up.

82 lost after conceding 2 in extra time :-) Oh to lose at home in The Championship. We used to be that bad younger viewers. 1982 haven't won at home in 9 months, or 17 home games, whichever sounds funnier to you.

I think Clarke has been watching YouTube vids of his boss in his QPR heyday.
Not for me but I can imagine a section of our fan base would be impressed

Clarke threw a punch which missed so earned his red card, the Colchester player might have a chance of winning an appeal though.

Are you kidding?
Would need to see more, but if that ref didn't give a warning that the throw needed to be taken and explain that it wasn't worth getting sent off for so just take it now, then that's terrible refereeing. Or did I miss something?
But in his defence, he's probably in a bad mood with that frigging drum going on. Why on earth do clubs allow it, all it does is annoy everybody.

After throwing away 2 points, 2 sent off, at pretty average Colchester team, leaving us 17th after 13. is it watching a half decent performance performance for once, key players getting fitter and beginning to look the part, or, our prongs of expectation finally lying face down, desensitised more than happy for small mercies once in a while?

Well, yes - good point re the 3! We didn't get pushed into a back 5 tonight and the link-up play through midfield was excellent for most of the game. Dare JB start with the same attacking formation against Newport on Saturday, who persistently play 3-5-2? So what are we expecting Saturday? what are your thoughts Bas? Newport too good for us to expect three points? A Newport win puts Joey on the brink, that’s what this late goal done tonight? I think last night, apart from the last 15 20 minutes was a very good performance. Assuming and hoping all concerned have learnt where it went wrong and we still have the personal fit/available for the County game ,we'll beat them. Bradford had the a draw felt like a loss Saturday,we had it at Colchester. An attacking formation and players selected,it went very well for a good hour.Joe has alot to be happy about,a definite clear vision of what was good and what was bad.The players should be able to see this too.So not too confusing or complicated. I expect us to have a good go against County and beat them.

Yep,I think last night is actually very encouraging Mango. Both good and bad clearly defined so therefore not too difficult to nurture the good and repair the bad. Bring on County!

I think the ref realised he had already booked him after doing it. We still ended up with the throw.

We're second bottom of the fair play league which, given who our manager is, is the least surprising part of this season. When you have a manager who spends half his life whinging about referees and has a questionable disciplinary record both on and off the pitch, is it any wonder 50:50 decisions go against us (if indeed they were questionable red cards)? Yet another reason Barton shouldn't be anywhere near this club in my opinion.

Don't know if the players were warned about time wasting watching no arguments for the Clarke sending off. Guy blocked off Clarke's run, but then Clarke appears to throw a punch at him
