The US Open champions were deserved 6-3 6-4 winners against Spaniard Granollers and Argentine Zeballos in Turin, Italy. With a 10th successive win at the tournament, the pair became the first back-to-back champions since 2017. "There is something very special about this place," Salisbury, 31, said. "I feel so lucky to be playing here and to have the success we have had in Turin is incredible." The Briton added: "We love playing here. When you have played well and had good matches [at a tournament] it brings back good feelings. "We want to play our best at these big tournaments. I'm just really proud of the effort we have put in on and off the court."

Great Britain's Davis Cup tie against Serbia to be shown on BBC Sport..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B482/production/_131701264_gettyimages-1676746939.jpg GB beat France in September to reach the Davis Cup quarter-finals
Great Britain's bid for success in the Davis Cup this month in Malaga, Spain will be shown live on BBC Sport. GB face Serbia - led by 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic - in the quarter-finals on 23rd November. The tie will be shown live on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app from 3pm. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/17CC4/production/_131767479_gettyimages-1687279292.jpgBritain, who last won the trophy in 2015, reached the Davis Cup Final Eight with a thrilling victory over France in September. In a round-robin event held in Manchester, Dan Evans and Neal Skupski saved four match points before winning the deciding doubles to book the home side's spot in the quarter-finals in Malaga. Later that week, captain Leon Smith's team were drawn in the last eight against Serbia. The GB captain initially named the same five-man squad - including three-time major champion Andy Murray, British number one Cameron Norrie, number two Evans and talented youngster Jack Draper - for the knockout phase. However, Murray pulled out last week with a shoulder injury and Evans - who was instrumental in helping them qualify - withdrew after injuring his calf in Vienna in October. Smith has brought in Joe Salisbury - who won the doubles title at the ATP Finals on Sunday - as a replacement for Evans and Liam Broady for Murray. If Great Britain beat Serbia, they will play in the semi-finals on Saturday 25th November at 11:00 GMT. The tie would be available to watch on BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website and app. The final takes place on Sunday 26th November at 3pm and the BBC will have live coverage whether GB are involved or not.

Davis Cup Finals 2023: Novak Djokovic seals Serbia's win over Great Britain..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport in Malaga.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/D3F4/production/_131806245_draper.jpg Jack Draper was playing only his second Davis Cup match for Great Britain
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BE07/production/_131774684_djoko_serbia.jpgGreat Britain are out of the Davis Cup after Cameron Norrie was unable to inflict a rare defeat on Novak Djokovic to keep alive their semi-final hopes. Britain's Jack Draper lost 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (8-6) to Miomir Kecmanovic in the opening match of the best-of-three tie. That result meant Norrie had to beat 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic for the first time in his career. But Djokovic showed his class as he cruised to a 6-4 6-4 win and set Serbia up for a semi-final against Italy. "It's difficult knowing that Cam has to go and play Djokovic after, and that's seemingly a must-win match for me," Draper, 21, said. "I back Cam but it's definitely a tough challenge to go out there knowing that there is a lot more pressure on me to win the match. "That's the kind of pressure that if I want to be a top player, I have to cope with and perform under. It's tough not to get the win today." Britain, who last won the Davis Cup in 2015, will not automatically qualify for the 2024 knockout stage after their quarter-final exit in Malaga. Unless they receive a wildcard for the Final Eight, Leon Smith's team will have to negotiate the same path as this year - a qualifying tie early next year, followed by the round-robin stage. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/481C/production/_131806481_draper.jpgDespite being in the twilight of his career, 36-year-old Djokovic's powers are showing little sign of diminishing. Djokovic's supremacy this season - and the gulf between him and most of his rivals - was further emphasised by a dominant performance against Norrie. Norrie has been a fixture inside the world's top 20 for three successive seasons but was short of the quality needed to really damage Djokovic. Djokovic took two of his 12 break point opportunities, while Norrie was only able to win eight points on the Serb's serve. Serbia will now face Italy after world number four Jannik Sinner inspired them to victory over the Netherlands earlier on Thursday. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14924/production/_131806248_serbia.jpg Kecmanovic did not face a break point in the opening set, winning 21 of his 25 first-serve points and backing that up with a reliable second serve. There was little to choose between Draper and 55th-ranked Kecmanovic - but it was the Serb who executed better in the crucial moments. An opening set full of hard-hitting and intense rallies showcased the power of the pair, with Draper holding off two break points at 3-4 and two set points at 4-5. That led to a tie-break where two double faults by Draper - for 2-0 and 5-2 respectively - proved costly. Kecmanovic, 24, served out the set - much to the delight of the vocal Serb contingent - but it was a bitter blow for Draper, who had played well in a hour-long opener without being able to penetrate his opponent's superb serve. The second set followed a similar pattern, without Draper facing the pressure he did in the opening set. The Briton trailed 5-2 after a nervy start to the tie-break, but Kecmanovic could not capitalise before Draper saved a match point with a composed volley which clipped the sideline. But a wide forehand - after which Draper threatened to smash his racquet into the court - set up another chance for Kecmanovic, which he took after landing another first serve. "I wouldn't say I returned amazingly well today, but when I did get the return back it seemed like he had the answer most of the time," Draper said. "His tennis level at times is, I think, top 10 in the world. He doesn't miss many balls. His ball speed is good off both sides, very consistent."

Great Britain men get Davis Cup wildcard, GB women in Billie Jean King Cup qualifying..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10E70/production/_131823296_gettyimages-1789620300.jpg Great Britain lost to France in the qualifying round of the Billie Jean King Cup in April but beat Sweden in their November play-offGreat Britain's men have been awarded a wildcard for next year's Davis Cup, while the women's team will enter the qualifying round of the Billie Jean King Cup in April. GB's men have received a wildcard in three of the past five years. They will not have to play a qualifier in February, instead entering the tournament in September's group stage. GB's women will face France in the qualifying round for the second successive year. France beat Anne Keothavong's team in Coventry this year, meaning they will host April's qualifiers. By receiving a Davis Cup wildcard, Great Britain will definitely be able to host one of September's four groups. In 2022, the Lawn Tennis Association signed a multi-year deal with the International Tennis Federation (ITF) to host group stage matches. "I think with the format we have today it's important to have some reassurance with where the group stages are going to be," said David Haggerty, president of the ITF. "We find that this brings stability to the competition - it gives more certainty to the players for them to plan their schedule." Seville have again been confirmed as hosts for the BJK Cup Finals in November, with Spain, wildcards Czech Republic, this year's champions Canada and runners-up Italy qualifying automatically. Malaga will host the Davis Cup Finals knockout stage in November for the third year in a row, despite world number one Novak Djokovic saying this week that the tournament "has to travel" around the world. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/B498/production/_131823264_bbc-sport-index-imagery-2-split-images-gradient-a7d9842d-030f-4fd3-b074-409d198ecdc0.pngAustralia captain Lleyton Hewitt, speaking after his side's 2-0 loss to Italy in the final, said the lack of home and away ties was "not ideal" "We are playing on a surface that I'm really sick of playing on, to be honest," the former Wimbledon champion said. "That's not what Davis Cup is about. It's playing on clay, grass, outdoor elements. It's obviously pretty frustrating." Davis Cup tournament director and former player Feliciano Lopez said defended the decision, however, saying he had a "productive conversation" with Djokovic. "One of the things he said is that the final leg should be rotated a little bit more," he said. "But Spain was also willing to bid for the final eight - in Madrid first, and then in Malaga. "I think it's going to be tough to find another city in Europe that has everything Malaga is at the moment offering because the weather is attractive, the venue is fantastic, the people from this region are very welcoming. "So we are in the right place, but I do agree that's it's not going to stay forever in Malaga." In this year's tournament, Djokovic's Serbia knocked out GB on Thursday but were beaten in the semi-final by eventual champions Italy.

Rafael Nadal: Former world number one to return at Brisbane International in January..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/CE99/production/_131898825_gettyimages-1246320192.jpg Nadal is a 22-time Grand Slam championRafael Nadal has confirmed he will return to competitive tennis at the Brisbane International after almost a year out with injury. The former world number one, 37, has been out of action since injuring his hip flexor in a second-round defeat at January's Australian Open. He has previously said he plans to retire at the end of the 2024 season. "After a year away from competition, it's time to come back," the Spaniard said in a video posted on social media. "It will be in Brisbane, the first week of January. I'll see you there." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/8079/production/_131898823_gettyimages-1457267223.jpgThe Brisbane International will help Nadal prepare for the Australian Open - the first major of the year - which Nadal won in 2009 and 2022. Last month, Australian Open chief Craig Tiley said Nadal would be participating in the tournament, although the player is yet to confirm this. The 22-time Grand Slam champion has been sidelined since his defeat by Mackenzie McDonald in Melbourne and underwent surgery in June. When he announced he would miss the French Open for the first time in 19 years - the tournament where he has won 14 of his majors - Nadal said 2024 will "probably" be the last year of his career. At the time Nadal was joint with Serbia's Novak Djokovic for the joint record number of men's major triumphs, but Djokovic has since won the French Open and US Open to move to 24 Grand Slam titles. Nadal has dropped to number 633 in the world rankings but he is still eligible for a protected ranking having been injured and not competing in any event for at least six months. The Brisbane International is returning after a three-year hiatus forced by the Covid-19 pandemic and will take place between 31st December and 7th January. The Australian Open starts on 14th January.

Chris Evert: 18-time Grand Slam singles champion says cancer has returned..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13BE2/production/_131966808_evert_getty.jpg Chris Evert (right) presented the trophies at the WTA Finals in NovemberTennis legend Chris Evert says her cancer has returned, two years after being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. American Evert, 68, was first diagnosed in December 2021 after a preventative hysterectomy and said in January 2023 she was "cancer-free". The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion says she will now undergo another round of chemotherapy. "While this is a diagnosis I never wanted to hear, I again feel fortunate it was caught early," Evert said. Evert released the statement through ESPN, who she works for as a pundit. She said she will not travel to the Australian Open, which begins on 14 January, but added she would be "ready for the rest of the Grand Slam season". Her former playing rival, Martina Navratilova, previously credited Evert with supporting her when she was diagnosed with throat and breast cancer in 2022. "Since I was first diagnosed with cancer two years ago, I've been very open about my experience," Evert said. "Based on a PET CT scan, I underwent another robotic surgery this past week. Doctors found cancer cells in the same pelvic region. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/0B96/production/_131966920_evert_getty.jpg"All cells were removed, and I have begun another round of chemotherapy." Evert won a women's record seven French Open singles titles and a joint-record six US Open titles, along with three Wimbledon titles and two at the Australian Open. The former world number one has worked as a pundit since retiring in 1989. Evert's sister, Jeanne, died of the same disease in 2020. "I encourage everyone to know your family history and advocate for yourself," Evert added. "Early detection saves lives. Be thankful for your health this holiday season."

Orange Bowl: Hannah Klugman, 14, wins junior championships..By Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3E41/production/_131973951_gettyimages-1659591869.jpg Klugman reached the US Open girls' singles quarter-finals in SeptemberBritain's Hannah Klugman won the prestigious Orange Bowl junior championships at the age of 14. She beat Tyra Caterina Grant, 15, of the United States 6-3 6-3 in the final of the under-18 division in Florida. In October Klugman became the youngest player to qualify for a $100,000 (£80,000) event on the ITF World Tour, and went on to reach the quarter-finals in Shrewsbury. The record was held by current US Open champion Coco Gauff. Past winners of the Orange Bowl include future Grand Slam champions Chris Evert, Caroline Wozniacki, Bianca Andreescu and Gauff, who was 14 when she won it in 2018. "It's an amazing feeling," Klugman said. "I played 14s last year and made the final. I was really gutted I didn't get the win, and obviously to get the win at under-18s, it's incredible. "This is still just part of the journey - a little step - but it's nice. "I was walking past the poster with all the great players [who have won]. I saw Coco Gauff. It's good that I can be on that board. It doesn't mean anything in the big picture but hopefully I can make it." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/12/11/00/78802467-12847899-image-a-18_1702254196007.jpg

Emma Raducanu to make WTA comeback in Auckland in January..By Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17966/production/_131941669_gettyimages-1475428335.jpg Raducanu has not played since losing 6-2 6-1 to Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart in AprilBritain's Emma Raducanu will make her comeback to the tennis tour in Auckland in the first week of January. The 2021 US Open champion has been out of action since April and has fallen to 296 in the world rankings following three operations. She has been awarded a wildcard into the ASB Classic, with US Open champion Coco Gauff and former world number one Caroline Wozniacki also in the line-up. The women's tournament at the Auckland Classic takes place from 1-7 January. The Australian Open - the first Grand Slam of the season - begins on January 14th. Raducanu, 21, was restricted to just nine matches in 2023 and in May had surgery on both of her hands and left ankle, which she injured in Auckland at the start of the year. The hand pain, caused by a bone very close to her wrists, had been troubling her since the end of the 2022 season. Having been injured for more than six months, Raducanu is entitled to use a protected ranking of 103 - her ranking at the conclusion of the Madrid Open, which was the last event she entered. That is currently just too low to earn automatic entry into the Australian Open, so Raducanu will need to make her way through qualifying - unless a wildcard is offered by Tennis Australia, or about half a dozen players withdraw. Raducanu had been hoping to play an exhibition event in Macau last weekend but withdrew last month as she was not sure she would be ready. She still flew to Hong Kong to fulfil some sponsor obligations but is expected to continue her preparations at the National Tennis Centre (NTC) in London later this week. Raducanu is said to have made good progress training with LTA staff at the NTC over the past eight weeks, but she has still not firmed up the team that will accompany her on tour next year. If Raducanu does not need to qualify for the Australian Open, then she could take the opportunity to play elsewhere. There are WTA events in Hobart and Adelaide in the week before the Australian Open, and she could also be tempted by the chance to play exhibition matches at the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B1DB/production/_131713554_raducanu_getty.jpg

Jamie Murray named tournament director of Queen's Club Championships..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/DBD5/production/_130977265_gettyimages-1649508930.jpg Jamie Murray has previous tournament director experienceJamie Murray has been named tournament director of the Queen's Club Championships. Multi-Grand Slam-winning doubles player Murray, 37, will continue to play in 2024 but not at Queen's itself (17-23 June). Last year, ex-pro Laura Robson became Nottingham Open tournament director. Murray has experience as a tournament director, having organised the Battle of the Brits event between Scotland and England in Aberdeen in late 2023. "It's a real honour to be given this opportunity by the Lawn Tennis Association, to work on such a prestigious and well-regarded tournament with the event team during the year, supporting the development and growth of the cinch Championships," Murray said. "As most people know, I have a genuine interest in the events side of the business having started as a tournament director of the Murray Trophy and most recently organising Battle of the Brits in ensuring the best possible experience for the players and fans who attend."

Tara Moore: British tennis player cleared of doping and ban lifted..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E1C0/production/_125329775_taramoore_getty-2.jpg Tara Moore was ranked 83rd in the world at the time of her suspensionBritish tennis player Tara Moore is free to play again after a panel ruled that contaminated meat was the source of her failed doping test. Moore, 31, was ranked as Britain's leading women's doubles player when she was provisionally banned in May 2022. She maintained she had never "knowingly taken a banned substance" and intended to prove she was a "clean athlete". An independent tribunal found Moore "bore no fault or negligence" for her adverse analytical finding. Moore tested positive for nandrolone metabolites and Boldenone from a test when was competing in the Colombian capital Bogota in April 2022. The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said it "has issued, and will continue to issue, information concerning the risks of meat contamination in certain parts of the world to all players". In response to the ruling, Moore said she has suffered "19 months of lost time and emotional distress" with her reputation damaged as a result of the case. "It's going to take more than 19 months to rebuild, repair and recuperate what we've been through," she wrote on X. "But we will come back stronger than ever."

Novak Djokovic: Rafael Nadal can be Grand Slam threat on injury return in Australia..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16CC8/production/_132148339_djokovicandnadal.jpg Nadal defeated Djokovic in the 2022 French Open quarter-finals on his way to winning the title in ParisWorld number one Novak Djokovic believes Rafael Nadal will be competitive at next month's Australian Open, despite his injury absence. The Spaniard, 37, a 22-time Grand Slam winner, is set to make his comeback in Brisbane this weekend ahead of the first tennis major of the year. His last match was a second-round loss to American Mackenzie McDonald at the Australian Open in January. The 2024 edition of that tournament begins on 14th January in Melbourne. "I always expect him [Nadal] to play at his best, to be honest," said Djokovic, 36, who won three Grand Slams in 2023 to reach a record 24 for his career and overtake Nadal. "Many times they've signed him out, they've done that with me as well. But we've proved them wrong. "He's not a kind of a player that will come back to the tour just to play - let's say - on a medium level, play a few matches. "He wants to win titles, he wants to be the best, that's why he is who he is: a legend of our sport. I'm sure that his training and preparation is done with an intention to win a Grand Slam." Nadal has said that 2024 is likely to be his final season on tour, after needing surgery on a hip injury and slipping down to 670th in the world rankings. He won the Australian Open in 2009 and 2022 and is a record 14-time champion at the French Open. World number two Carlos Alcaraz, who played Djokovic in an exhibition match in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, also believes his compatriot is ready for action. "I saw some videos of him practising, he's 100%," said 20-year-old Alcaraz. "I hear from other players that they practised with Rafa in these past weeks and they said that he's going to return to his good level. His top level. "I think he's ready for great things this year as well."

Emma Raducanu feels 'reborn' as she prepares for comeback at Auckland Classic..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11591/production/_132175017_raducanu_getty2.jpg Emma Raducanu last played in Stuttgart in AprilBritain's Emma Raducanu says she feels "reborn" as she prepares to make her tennis return in Auckland after eight months on the sidelines. The 2021 US Open champion played just nine matches in 2023, having been out of action since April. Raducanu, 21, had surgery on both hands and her left ankle in May, and has dropped to 298th in the world rankings. She was offered a wildcard for next week's Auckland Classic and has drawn a qualifier in the first round. "I feel reborn in a way. I feel fresh, I feel ready, I feel happy and I feel excited," she said. "Overall, I'm feeling positive and lighter. I think that for two years after the US Open I felt maybe a bit more weight on my shoulders, but now I feel completely fresh." Should she win her first match in Auckland, Raducanu - who has entered the tournament with a protected ranking - will face Danish former world number one Caroline Wozniacki or Ukrainian Elina Svitolina in the second round. But the former world number 10 must go through qualifying to reach the main draw of the Australian Open, with the first Grand Slam tournament of 2024 starting on 14th January.

United Cup: Katie Boulter beats Jessica Pegula in GB defeat by US..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A467/production/_132178024_gettyimages-1888261546.jpg Katie Boulter (left) is ranked 56th in the world - 51 places below Jessica Pegula Katie Boulter stunned American world number five Jessica Pegula for the biggest win of her career but was unable to stop Great Britain from falling to defeat at the United Cup. Boulter, ranked 51 places below Pegula, came from a set and double break down to win the opening singles rubber 5-7 6-4 6-4. But the United States fought back, with Taylor Fritz defeating Cameron Norrie. Fritz and Pegula then beat Boulter and Neal Skupski in the deciding doubles. Victory over the US would have meant GB qualified for the quarter-finals of the tournament in Perth, but they must now wait to learn their fate with group C opponents the US and hosts Australia set to meet on Monday. In January 2023, the first edition of the mixed-team competition, Pegula led the US to the United Cup title, but on Sunday she was forced to save three Boulter set points at 4-5 in the opening set. From there, the 29-year-old won six successive games to take the first set and build a double-break advantage in the second. But Boulter fought back, winning six of the next seven games to level the match at a set apiece before wrapping up victory in two hours and 44 minutes for her first win over a top-five opponent. Her previous best wins by ranking were her two victories over then world number seven Karolina Pliskova in 2022, first at Eastbourne and then Wimbledon. In the second singles match, world number 18 Norrie got off to a slow start as Fritz - ranked eight places higher - raced into a 4-1 lead. Although the Briton levelled at 5-5, it was Fritz who edged a tight tie-break to win the first set, before the American got the decisive break of serve in the ninth game of the second set to win 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 and send the tie to deciding mixed doubles. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10866/production/_132168676_gettyimages-1891890113.jpgBoulter and Skupski dropped just a single game as they breezed the first set, but the second proved more competitive. The Americans prevailed in the tie-break, before comfortably winning the match tie-break for a 1-6 7-6 (7-4) 10-7 victory. Success over Australia on Monday would mean the defending champions progress to the quarter-finals.

Rafael Nadal says he may continue playing beyond 2024 after starting comeback in Brisbane..By Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/9EEF/production/_132178604_gettyimages-1896073521.jpg Rafael Nadal had an operation on his hip in June and had not played since January 2023 Rafael Nadal began his comeback with a doubles loss at the Brisbane International but he has not closed the door on playing singles beyond this season. The 22-time Grand Slam champion was beaming at the end of his first match in nearly a year but he and Marc Lopez lost 6-4 6-4 to Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson. Nadal had an operation on his left hip in June and has indicated this season will very likely be his last, but the desire to play on remains strong. "If I am playing well - something that can happen - if I am free of injuries - something that history says is very difficult - and if I am not having too much pain on a daily basis, if all the things together happen, why not?" Nadal, 37, told BBC Sport. "I don't want to say 100% that's going to be my last year, because I keep loving tennis and keep enjoying what I am doing." His doubles partner in Brisbane, Lopez, is part of Nadal's coaching team and rarely plays these days, but it was useful practice before the Spaniard's singles match with 2020 US Open champion and qualifier Dominic Thiem on Tuesday. "Competing is different than practising, but in terms of practising with the guys here, I am quite happy because I feel competitive against the players that I played in practice," said Nadal, who had not played since January's Australian Open. "Of course I don't have the expectations that I used to have in the past."

Emma Raducanu battles to victory at Auckland Classic in first match in eight months..By Matthew Henry, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/112D6/production/_132185307_gettyimages-1901582101.jpg Raducanu played just nine matches in 2023 because of injuryEmma Raducanu said she is "grateful to be healthy" again after winning her first match following eight months out with injury at the Auckland Classic. The Briton, playing for the first time since wrist and ankle surgeries, fought through a tense deciding set to beat world number 134 Elena-Gabriela Ruse. She let slip a 5-2 lead in the third set and missed two match points at 5-3 before eventually winning 6-3 4-6 7-5. "It's pretty amazing to just be out here and playing," Raducanu, 21, said. "I'm just really happy to be back on the tour and can't wait to start this season and carry on hopefully injury-free and healthy. "It's difficult after having such a long hiatus, but I'm grateful to be healthy, grateful to be able to move my body, not bed-ridden and in a wheelchair." After the final point, the 2021 US Open champion, who needed a wildcard to enter the tournament having dropped to 301 in the rankings, covered her face with her hand in a celebration mixed with pleasure and relief. The tougher test of Ukrainian second seed Elina Svitolina awaits in the second round. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15606/production/_132185578_gettyimages-1901660619.jpgRaducanu said she felt "reborn" before her comeback, having had surgeries on both wrists and her ankle in May. She showed little sign of rustiness in a comfortable first set in which she was particularly strong on serve. Ruse, 26, then raised her level and snatched the momentum with her powerful groundstrokes in taking the second set. After a tight start to the decider, Raducanu, who looked free of injury throughout the match, moved into the ascendancy by breaking to love for a 3-2 lead and continued by confidently taking the next two games. Ruse then swung freely and her attacks earned back the first break back before she saved the first two match points. When Raducanu double-faulted while handing back the second break, the Romanian looked favourite at 5-5. However, a fine backhand on to the baseline gave the Briton another break of serve and with it the third opportunity to serve out the match. The final game was not easy as Raducanu fell 0-30 behind but timely and effective first serves gave her two more match points and Ruse netted on the second after being pulled out wide. Raducanu's meeting with Svitolina will act as further preparation for the Australian Open, which begins on 14 January. Currently, she will have to go through qualifying to reach the main draw but the Briton will get direct entry as the first alternate if there any more withdrawals from the Melbourne Grand Slam. Raducanu, who has a protected ranking of 103, could also be awarded one of four remaining wildcard spots in the women's singles draw.

Brisbane International: Andy Murray loses to Grigor Dimitrov in first round..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C876/production/_132181315_whatsubject.jpg Andy Murray won the Brisbane International in 2012 and 2013Andy Murray made a first-round exit from the Brisbane International as Grigor Dimitrov came from behind to win in three sets. Bulgarian second seed Dimitrov triumphed 4-6 7-5 6-2 to progress at the season-opening tournament. The defeat is a setback for Murray's preparations for the Australian Open, which starts on 14th January. It comes after the Briton said the 2024 season could be his last on tour if he is "not enjoying it". The 36-year-old struggled with a shoulder injury in the latter months of 2023, while illness and a bruised knee made for what he described as a "tricky" pre-season in an interview with BBC Sport before the Brisbane event. Playing in his first competitive singles match since October, Murray came out on top of a tight first set that went with the serve, sealing the opener on its only break point after an error-strewn Dimitrov service game. More comfortable holds for both players followed, with Dimitrov eventually edging ahead in the ninth game - the first of the set to feature break-point opportunities. Although Murray - a two-time champion in Brisbane - cancelled it out immediately, Dimitrov broke again before saving two break points, including one with a broken string, on his way to sealing the second set. In the third, the world number 14 raced to a 4-0 lead, and while Scot Murray slowed Dimitrov's pace despite issues with his racquet, he could not convert a break point at 5-2 from which his opponent held. "I've really missed this tournament," said 2017 champion Dimitrov, who will face German Daniel Altmaier or Australian qualifier Li Tu in the second round. "Here we go, kicking off the new year in style. "I just wanted to carry [last season] on. Of course it's never easy, especially when you're playing so well at the end of the year, you put pressure on yourself to start well. "As soon as I came out here today, I felt a little rusty to be honest. I have to keep on fighting, I have to keep on believing in the work that I've put in." Before the Australian Open, Murray will play the Kooyong Classic exhibition in Melbourne next week.

Rafael Nadal wins at Brisbane International on long-awaited return from injury..By Harry Poole, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8D52/production/_132187163_gettyimages-1894081168.jpg Rafael Nadal's previous singles match was a second-round loss at the Australian Open on 18th January 2023Rafael Nadal impressed on his long-awaited return after almost a year out with injury as he beat Dominic Thiem at the Brisbane International. Nadal, contesting his first singles match in 349 days, won 7-5 6-1. Spain's 22-time Grand Slam champion has indicated this season will likely be the last of his illustrious career. "Today is honestly an emotional and important day for me after probably one of the toughest years of my tennis career," 37-year-old Nadal said. "I had the chance to come back after a year and play in front of an amazing crowd and play at a very positive level on the first day, [It] is something that makes us feel proud - my team and family who have been there every day in the last year." Wildcard Nadal is using the tournament to prepare for the Australian Open, which starts on 14th January in Melbourne. He will play Australian Jason Kubler, ranked 102, in the last 16 on Thursday. The last time Nadal was seen in singles action he struggled with injury as he lost to Mackenzie McDonald in the second round of the 2023 Australian Open. He had an operation on his left hip in June and has has since slipped to 672nd in the world rankings. Nadal began his comeback by partnering compatriot Marc Lopez in a doubles loss to Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson in Brisbane on Sunday, two days before his first singles test. At times on Tuesday, it appeared as though Nadal had never been away. sportshub.cbsistatic.com/i/r/2023/12/01/539e45c2-6955-4243-8589-908d78cefdff/thumbnail/770x433/b3c12289f19062649e05ee0ba1980110/gettyimages-1456696827-1-1.jpgHe set the tone by winning 21 of his opening 24 points on serve, displaying skill, poise and athleticism to the delight of the expectant evening crowd. Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion who has had his own injury problems, had come through his first five service games without any scares. But Nadal, with famed intensity and reassuringly sharp movement, seized his opportunity in the 12th game - taking his fourth break point to wrap up the first set. He maintained that momentum at the start of the second set, securing love holds either side of breaking the Austrian's serve for a second time as he opened a 3-0 lead. A fading Thiem managed to end the run of games against him but he was unable to prevent Nadal securing another break for a commanding 5-1 advantage. When he secured the victory, Nadal raised his arms and thanked the crowd as they celebrated a moment of great significance with him. He said in May, after being forced to miss the French Open for the first time in 19 years, that 2024 will "probably" be the final year of his career. But, following his doubles return in Brisbane, he said his desire to play on remains strong and he did not want to say "100%" that this season would be his last. Victory over Thiem was Nadal's 1,069th at tour level, a total which moved him past Ivan Lendl to sit fourth on the all-time men's list. "As you can imagine, today it wasn't a statistic I was aware of," Nadal said. "I had enough work just to be focused and come back on court and remember how to play in a competitive match. "There were nerves and doubts before the match. But things went well and I'm excited to be back." Prior to his injury, Nadal was level with Serbia's Novak Djokovic for the record number of men's major triumphs, but Djokovic went on to win last year's French Open and US Open to move to 24 Grand Slam titles.

Emma Raducanu: Briton enters main draw at Australian Open..By Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent.

American Lauren Davis' withdrawal with a shoulder injury means the 21-year-old Briton now has direct entry into the main draw of the Grand Slam event. Raducanu is 301st in the world, but was able to enter with a special ranking of 103 - her position before missing a minimum of six months through injury. The Australian Open begins on 14th January in Melbourne, with the draw taking place on Thursday, 11th January. As well as Davis' withdrawal, French Open finalist Karolina Muchova, Irina-Camelia Begu and Caty McNally have pulled out, while two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova withdrew after announcing she is pregnant with her first child. Raducanu's most recent Grand Slam appearance was at last year's Australian Open, where she lost to Coco Gauff in the second round. The former US Open champion returned to the tour in Auckland this week with a win over Romania's Elena Gabriela Ruse. It was her first match since having minor operations on both hands and her left ankle in early May. Her second round match in Auckland, against the second seed Elina Svitolina, is scheduled to begin at 05:30 GMT on Thursday.

Emma Raducanu out of Auckland Classic with three-set defeat by Elina Svitolina..By Sam Drury, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/514A/production/_132201802_gettyimages-1906368641.jpg Emma Raducanu was playing her second match since returning from wrist and ankle surgeries
Emma Raducanu is out of the Auckland Classic after falling to a 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 defeat by second seed Elina Svitolina in the second round. The Briton, playing her second match since wrist and ankle surgeries, raced into a 5-1 lead in the first set before taking it in the tie-break. Svitolina won the second after another tie-break and, with Raducanu tiring, took the third in just 31 minutes. Next up for Raducanu is the Australian Open, which begins on 14th January. The 2021 US Open champion was playing with fairly heavy strapping on her right thigh but went toe to toe with world number 25 Svitolina before fading after an intense first two sets that each lasted more than an hour. "I can take away that I played a high level for two long sets," Raducanu said. "I'm proud of how quickly I was able to get my level up, as Elina gives you nothing. "To be able to play like I did for two sets, in my second match back... the level was raised really quickly." While Raducanu's focus turns to the first Grand Slam of the year in Melbourne, Svitolina progresses to the Auckland quarter-final where she will play Czech Republic's Marie Bouzkova. Raducanu will receive direct entry into the main draw for the Australian Open following American Lauren Davis' withdrawal with a shoulder injury. After a hard-fought victory over Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse in the first round, this was another gruelling encounter for Raducanu as she continues her return from injury. The 21-year-old began well to go a double break up but was twice unable to convert when serving for the first set. However, she showed her resilience in the breaker, setting up her first set point with a drop shot and - after a double fault - converting the second with a deft forehand. Svitolina came fighting back at the start of the second with Raducanu saving two break points in the opening game, only for Ukraine's former world number three to convert the third. Raducanu broke back immediately, but Svitolina made it three games against the serve in a row to restore her advantage. Again, Raducanu hit back though with another break to make it 3-3 and from there it stayed on serve to set up another tie-break. The Briton went up 3-1 before Svitolina reeled off six straight points to level the contest and never looked back. Raducanu was showing signs of fatigue with two unforced errors gifting Svitolina a pair of break points in the first game of the third set. They were repelled, with a third saved with an ace, but a double fault eventually gave Svitolina the break. There was no way back for Raducanu, who looked understandably weary after a long injury absence from the tour, and an energised Svitolina ruthlessly finished the job.
