Still not got us to the heady heights that Coughlan did, perhaps he was a better motivator.... He took the Sargeant Major approach to motivation. Currently aiming to make Newport more professional next year, now that he's kept them up. Which is funny considering who Barton brought to the board.

He had a midfield that won the battles and scored a goal or two.Eg Ollie Clark. Upfront he had the best hitman in the division,JCH. I thought it excellent. Others decided it was'nt as good enough (oh what a surprise) ,not like MOTD ad nauseam. He also used a simple system that the players understood and bought into which in turn made us incredibly difficult to beat because players understood their roles, even when outside the starting 11. I saw no evidence that he overthought or unnecessarily tinkered with things because he thought he was a tactical genius. On the contrary he kept things simple which is genius in itself. Imagine how our season might have gone if he had the tools that Joey has been given

As did I, I enjoyed his time with us, Walsall and Ipswich away under GC were true fighting performances, the team gave all, I liked his honest, brash uncomplicated manner.

He got a tune out of an arguably much less talented squad than we have now, and he played the hand he was dealt. Probably the most underrated manager we have had in my 50 yrs plus as a Gashead Yes, he was certainly underrated, not sure about the most in the 50 years but him and David Williams who seems to be forgotten now (a long time ago!) seem to be the two I think are underrated. GC certainly made the most of what he had and created a do or die attitude that had us far higher in the league than what was expected. Could do with another of his famous 1-0 wins that we had in the cup at Argyle in his time with us tonight. Istr bodies in the way and a perhaps fortunate win there in December ‘19, second round replay I think. UTG!

Imagine how our season might have gone if he had the tools that Joey has been given JBs style is definitely harder to grasp, but that does'nt mean it's not worth persevering with. Moaners may of played a decision in GCs decision to quit, but they've at least so far failed to remove JB. I doubt GC would of captured such good loan signings as JB, but fantasising about GC at Rovers with the same clout as JB, is so full of conjecture it does'nt produce anything creditable.

At Shrews,a couple of places above us in the table. Was offered a contract by JB at the end of our relegation season, but decided to move on.

My memory is ghat Williams was highly rated by Gasheads and most if not all were disappointed and sorry when he left for Norwich but understood why he would want a crack at playing at the higher level. For my money he is the best manager we've had in my lifetime although didn’t quite achieve the success other managers have had. I remember his teams playing attacking and entertaining football and am certain we would have been promoted under him had the playoffs then been in place I think it’s the lack of success and the fact that this was 40 yrs ago that explain why he is not remembered better
