I enjoyed it,a better game than I anticipated,I think largely because I thought Wanderers might be content to relax,a pre play off rest. They were'nt.
An observation on the National Anthem on this Coronation Weeked. Not use to it,are we.Plenty sang along though. There appeared a lack of decorum and respect from the fc,with reserves, coaches and manager strolling across the field of play, apparently oblivious to the anthem and its importance to some Gasheads.
Poor timing on starting the anthem? A lack of respect?
The more fashionable taking the knee was respected.
Wanderers were quick out the blocks, efficient passing at good tempo. They deservedly took the lead. Rovers still created a good chance or two.
The second half saw Rovers take a turn at enjoying the lions share of possession. Some of our passing was really excellent, two touch, triangles and quickish.
Glen Whealan came on for his last hurrah.I thought his cameo role in deep midfield was flawless. What a fantastic career Glen has had.I hope he's to stay at Rovers in a coaching role.
Josh softened the Bolton defence up,big John came on and softened them up abit more.
Hoole and Gordon, two of our fixed players had decent games. We struck the 'woodwork' twice.
Obviously we need to improve in both areas, but I think we're on the right path.
After the lap of honour ,Joe told us he promises we're building a team to challenge next time.
I'm a believer.

When JB took over, we were told about a growing culture of professionalism - I haven't seen much evidence of this on or off the pitch. On the FC, this is to be be expected - the manager and the vast majority of coaches are Liverpudlians, aren't they? I'm guessing you saw Liverpool fans indulging in their ritual ceremony of 'aren't we hard done by and aren't we always discriminated against' yesterday? Needless to say, Hillsborough was a terrible miscarriage of justice and tragedy , but then so was Heysel, which resulted in British clubs being banned from Europe. Liverpool fans aren't quite as insufferable as their Celtic counterparts with their songs about the IRA and Bobby Sands and their faux Palestinian 'solidarity', but they are getting there. If you don't agree with the royal family and the coronation, then that's fine. But show respect to those that do by standing in silence and letting them sing their hearts out lustily. I'm less concerned about the game (last game is a 'dead rubber' and I only checked in afterwards) and more concerned about the end of season form. A serious tail-off and 17th is basically bottom of our 'mini league'. On the plus side, the manager has a chance to 'clear the decks' for next season. I would see to see fewer loans and a stronger emphasis on team-building. Unfortunately, I think we are going to see the opposite.

When a message keeps being hammered out there’s tendency to believe it because it’s the path of least resistance. So when Gasheads are continually told progress is being made it’s natural that most accept it but there is a problem with that assertion if we look at this season compared to recent seasons in League 1. In 20/21 with negligent managers, poor players and the club described by JB as a sh*t show the team was still in 19th place when he took over in February. In 2019/20 with the turmoil of Graham Coughlan giving way to Ben Garner and the implementation of the new vision the team still managed to finish in 14th place. But the biggest point of comparison is probably 2018/19 which most Gasheads seem to have forgotten. Under the Chairmanship of the dreaded Steve Hamer and managership of DC and then Graham Coughlan Rovers came 15th. We got to the semi final of the EFL trophy and in the last game of the season at the Mem,in front of 9859 fans, we beat runners up Barnsley 2-1. Is the progress we keep hearing about real or imagined ?

Hence Coburn did not count. No idea why 6 were allowed.

something has improved.......over 10,000 there today!!! for a game in which nothing was riding on it!! There were 9859 at the last game in 2018/19 with nothing riding on it and we won ! Indeed, the last home game tends to get a decent crowd, so long as we have not been relegated.

I see our average attendance ended up nearly 1500 up on the previous season, so hopefully with the new south stand development we might actually reach that five figure average.

Hence Coburn did not count. No idea why 6 were allowed. Yep, spot on. HT - Marquis for Coburn Slot 1. 78 mins - Whelan for Finley Slot 2. 81 mins - Balcombe, Bogarde, MacDonald & Connolly for Belshaw, Evans, Gordon & Quansah. Slot 3. 90+5 mins - McCormick for Whelan So the issue wasn't the slots, it was the sheer number of subs. Can only presume that one of the Slot 2 changes was for a concussion though as I said earlier, didn't look to be that.

Just got back..
Probably one of the most quietest last game of season matches from our end singing....but then we have been blessed in recent times of fairy tale endings.
But hey, when you see a walking pizza rolling up to the away end with a banana and what appears to be an avocado, you know it's probably better grub you'd get at Irene's Kitchen!?
Anyhoos, onto less important things...
Rightly m o m Luca gets his just rewards goal for a fabulous debut season in league 1, rising to the challenge admirably (if he isn't picked to play CB against a hungry McGoldrick!?) plus a sumptuous ball for Scotty to run on to for the Coburn headbut post incident!? ...a real asset and attitude this season. A real turn up, as Mansfield away first game of season last campaign seems ages away when we were scratching around for a RB/RWB. He's made this position his own, been a star at this position, undroppable, appears to live his football but JAB still insists on tinkering and I think this displaces his form, and that has effects on the whole team...
Other wonders to see were an Azza 360 twirl that back healed pass. I really have enjoyed his contributions since signing....I know he hasn't turned up in last few weeks, but I saw him pre match yesterday and he was as cheerful and jovial and took time with fans and staff alike....his on the pitch football has always been played with a smile and just looks like he's enjoying himself. Whether he will continue after us in the same way, who knows? To me he's obviously departing before the end of the next transfer window, I truly hope he stays as he's entertainment enough and emulates what we are all her for: to be happily entertained and to try.
Other wonders to see was Thommos @rse! A genuinely hilarious slapstick moment where Finley "accidentally" slipped and pulled down no25 shorts to reveal he's wearing a thong!? Haha! Brilliant!?
Other wonders to see were the Butcombe Bar pre match Thatchers cider pump playing up so they turn to cans....£5.50 a shout! Yes, £5.50 for a can you can buy for £1.50?! Absolutely disgraceful. I have de funded the club this season as I prefer options to pay cash so it wasn't my party, but if it were me I would've walked away!
.... although some paid £100 nicker in the restaurant corporate for a salad! Haha!
Never disappoints to see the club I don't recognise getting further away from me, but hey if it floats your boat carry on.
JAB said post match he feels like a failure and in some ways I very much agree. Some of his decisions have been truly baffling and opened himself up to failure, that successful managers and clubs just don't make.
Celery Ballscombe is a case in hand ... Whom signs a goalkeeper with conditions they have to play? If it was the only option in the whole world, I would agree, but there must have been other loan offers out there...? ... and then goes on to concede 5 goals away to a now relegated club!? A keeping failure....which set of a run of games we lost to teams in the bottom of the table that spelled our doom on play off ambitions.
Too many players have underperformed and still get their gig. The manager has to take responsibility for that. An indirect failure.
Going public with chastising players has always appeared crass and disrespectful, but perhaps we might have gotten more if it had been dealt with in a more trustful way? A diplomatic failure.
The defence has been a major cause for concern. Maybe Kevin Bond departure had an effect? Who knows? But we couldn't settle and Connolly couldn't regain his last season form.
To counter... Scotty has played some delicious football worthy of admission fee alone.
The loan sources of Gibson, Bogarde and Coburn have been well researched and thought out.
Rossiter and Ward have been two midfield dynamos that warrant more credit as support for our mid play.
Gordon looking better and better in the second half of season. Would love to see him springboard his form into next season.
John Marquis is the quiet assassin that adds an extra dimension to not just his finishing, but how he conducts himself on the pitch to create chances for others. Great acquisition.
We may be seeing the end of Coutts and Whelan, thanks for their input. Also, McCormick....troubled and displaced. I hope he finds his form with us, and potential.
All in all, this season it was better seeing some of you off the pitch than some of play on it! But we had some exhilarating times, great away days and some players we'll never see again in the quarters...
Hope we all make it through to August without giving up our faith, well done to all contributors here and always, always UptheGas! Until then...Cobbers or Stockport?
