Stats - Accrington 2 BRFC 0 - 38% - 62% - Shots 9-8 - On Target 2-4 - Corners 4-2 - Referee: Tom Nield - Attendance: 2,510 (554 away) Second-half goals from Tommy Leigh and Ryan Astley condemn Rovers to defeat at Wham Stadium. Shaun Whalley had the game's first effort at goal just past the 10-minute mark. Accrington goalkeeper Toby Savin launched the ball upfield to the Stanley no.7, who hit the ball on the half-volley and saw his effort crash against the base of the post. Scott Sinclair was shown the first caution of the game from referee Tom Nield. Following a late tackle, Liam Coyle picked up Accrington's first yellow of the tie. The Stanley no.6 was late on James Connolly after the Rovers defender had regained control of the ball following a loose touch. The half-time break saw a change in personnel for the Gas. Antony Evans made way for Ryan Loft for the final 45 minutes. The hosts had the breakthrough five minutes after the restart. Rosaire Longelo clipped the ball into the Rovers penalty area, strong handball appeals from the Rovers players were waved away by the referee and Tommy Leigh was on hand to poke the ball into the net. Rovers had strong appeals waved away yet again by the referee, this time for an alleged denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity, after Ryan Loft had beaten his man for pace and was hauled to the ground. Referee Nield brandished a yellow card to Harvey Rodgers. The following free-kick was taken by Paul Coutts. The Gas captain lifted the ball into the box where it was met by the head of Connolly, who looked to direct his header towards goal but the ball was gratefully claimed by Savin. More attacking changes were on the way for Rovers. Luke McCormick was replaced by John Marquis for the final 20 minutes of the clash. Accrington scored their second goal with just over ten minutes to play. A corner kick was flicked on and Ryan Astley made no mistake with his right-footed shot from close range. Next up for the Gas is the visit of Wycombe Wanderers to The Mem on Saturday, 24th January (3pm). Accrington Stanley: Toby Savin, Ethan Hamilton, Ryan Astley, Liam Coyle, Shaun Whalley, Sean McConville, Rosaire Longelo, Harvey Rodgers, Aaron Pressley, Dan Martin, Seamus Conneely (c). Subs: Lukas Jensen, Tommy Leigh, Alhagi Touray Sisay, Doug Tharme, Josh Woods, Leslie Adekoya, Baba Fernandes. Rovers: James Belshaw, James Connolly, Sam Finley, Scott Sinclair, Aaron Collins, Paul Coutts (c), Antony Evans, Luke McCormick, James Gibbons, Luca Hoole, Josh Coburn. Subs: Anssi Jaakkola, Harvey Saunders, Ryan Loft, Glenn Whelan, John Marquis, Lewis Gordon. I do not know what happened to the McCormick we had before but he is really poor this time around. I would not be surprised if he is one of the surprises that Barton said will be going. As of now, he is just not doing the job he was supposed to do and i have no idea why. Not like he has not had the chance to get fit

McCormick, like Westbrooke, weak and ineffective.

Just got back..
Brilliant away day apart from the football!?
Can't really add anything else.... first goal right in front of us turn and shoot and goal. Matey allowed to turn, no challenge. Matey allowed to shoot, no blocking. Matey allowed to score, no save!?
Epitomised the tone if the footballing day.
Conditions didn't help, but I guess Accy acclimatised to it as used to them....why do we always get them away when weather is sh!te?
Not much else to add. We played poor and Accy thoroughly deserved win.
Big kick in the @rse and there's another thread about gut feeling...well this is exactly why we won't be successful at this time.
Nice seeing some of you yesterday, a great tour 🙂

Joey Barton says poor referee and 'blatant' handball cost Bristol Rovers dearly at Accrington..Joey Barton believes Bristol Rovers were "hampered" by a poor refereeing performance at Accrington Stanley, with the hosts' opener in a 2-0 defeat at the Wham Stadium the produce of a "blatant" handball. In a game short of quality, Accrington scored early in the second half through Tommy Leigh and referee Tom Nield allowed it to stand despite the ball clearly striking the hand of Harvey Rodgers immediately before substitute Leigh hit the back of the net. In wet and windy conditions and with neither side finding a consistent flow, it was always likely to prove decisive and the Gas could not make any inroads at the other end, with Ryan Astley's clever flick sealing the three points with 11 minutes to play. Barton says Mr Nield's decision to allow Leigh's 51st-minute goal swung the game in Accrington's favour. "I could see it from where I was and he’s seen it himself. He knows," Barton said of the handball decision. " I’ve got to be careful here as the FA love fining me, but our fans have paid a right few quid to get up here and then the referee swings the contest with as blatant a handball leading to a goal that you are ever likely to see in professional football. "A tough afternoon. We must be better as well, we’re back to the drawing board, we need some players in and we’ve got a bit of work to do in the market. "There are 57 points for us to play for and hopefully we can get competent officials who know the laws of the game. He’s just had the law book out to me saying the handball in the box, because it wasn’t deliberate and because he wasn’t the one that scored the goal, that’s OK. "Well, why would we not advise our players then to handle it to each other and let’s have a game of volleyball or basketball? The reason it is called football is because you are not allowed to use your hands. "He will sail off now into the unaccountable sunset of being a referee having short-changed the fans here of what was a fair contest. Accrington won’t care because they are fighting for their lives, but our fans have been short-changed today by a really bad officiating team" Rovers remained in eighth despite the defeat, with many of their rivals for the final play-off place also suffering losses. In the final 10 minutes with his team losing, Barton made his way away from the technical area down the touchline. He explained why he did not hang around, saying: "I’d just had enough. I thought ‘If I stay here, I’m asking for every decision, I’m not getting heard, I’ll end up swearing and they will end up sending me off’ because they were desperate to book me and send me off. "I thought if we are going to be treated this way by officials, I don’t want any part of the game. It’s just going to be moaning at the fourth official, who hasn’t got any clout at all and that leads to him calling the referee over and he gets after you. "We’ve been severely hampered today by the officiating team. They have swung the game to Accrington." Well it was good intentions to start with. Just didn't quite manage to stick to it though!

I've never seen before, and I can't remember hearing of, a manager walking away from the dug-out before the end of the game.
He explained why he did not hang around, saying: "I’d just had enough. I thought ‘If I stay here, I’m asking for every decision, I’m not getting heard, I’ll end up swearing and they will end up sending me off’ because they were desperate to book me and send me off.

Todays game word - horrible! The weather was horrible! The pies and Bovril - horrible! Accrington Stanley - horrible! They totally messed with us today. They were all over every player, they went to ground every time they could, they were time wasting, winding our players up, shirt pulling, blocking and throwing the ball away. The referee was in their pocket. He wasn't bad, they just played him at every opportunity. That said AS deserved to win. First to the ball, keen as mustard, fighting for everything and man marking that completely put us off our game. Best thing about the afternoon was the warm welcome in the pub and at the ground. They were promoting the @hergametoo, football for all. The last time I watched Gas at Accy, Magoo was in charge and that was dreadful. Today was no better. We had no idea and I lost count of the number of times we gave the ball away. We deserved and got nothing. We had no idea. We punted it long. That wasn't working so we .... punted it long again. The only time we performed was briefly after the first goal when we showed flashes of getting it together and put them on the back foot. Then we stopped. Most of the players looked as if they didn't want to be there. Sinclair was playing so deep he should have stood on the terraces. An abject waste of his skills. McCormick is a shadow the the player he seemed first time around. Coburn carried a Stanley player on his back most of the afternoon. Connolly looked frightened. Loft seemed lost. Hoole showed flashes of being a good player but seemed to have no confidence. The two goals were sloppy and the first definitely was handball. Even the steward said it was handball! Barton showed in the week he wasn't bothered about the cups, he doesn't seemed bothered about the league on this performance. When I told my wife that I was going to watch the Gas, she said 'Lovely!' No love, it was horrible! PS, Accrington Stanley are in 2 cups and moving back up the League. So much for us concentrating on the League. To redress this, when Barton was Fleetwood gaffer, they were horrible too and masters of time wasting. Maybe his reputation precedes him ? Many are making excuses about Thomas and i think that is poor as we have more than one player on the field. Barton walking off shows he still has his demons, maybe he did well to do so ifhe felt triggered. I am more concerned that Wael has not been to a game in 3 months and i believe an appearance would be a lift to many. It leads to too much being thought of this. Just hoping we do get some players in and get back to playing as we can, Accrington have been a bogey team, like Wrexham used to be. Personally i would have been happy with a draw, up there. On we go, let’s see what the next week and match brings. My gut says something is not as iot should be and i hope i am wrong Thanks KP - I didn't realise this. Maybe Wael has been busy in Jordan (not Price). When was the last time Wael communicated with fans via an open letter or official website statement)? Can he says what he likes, or does he have to check with Joey & Eddie first?
