A football thread.
Port Vale up in 5th and playing decent, attacking football, are our visitors tonight. Managed by a wonderful human being (remember that?) who will hopefully get the hero's reception he deserves.
Despite Darrell being Darrell, can't bring myself to hope we lose. (Ever).
Clarke in. ❤

Agree 100%. Clarke In
I hope he gets a loud standing ovation. Hopefully he is allowed to come out on his own, so he knows 100% that the applause is for him.
Should be a good game tonight, both teams like to play attacking football.

We have played Port Vale 68 times W 22, D 19, L 27 - We have won and lost 4-0 & 4-1 plus we have drew 4-4 & 3-3, not lost at home to them for 10 years.
They are nicknamed the Valiants, they play at Vale Park with a capacity of over 20k and have a Charlady called Carol.
Manager Darrell Clarke played 1 game for PV and of course is a former manager of BRFC, Stats for us were P 246, W 104, D 56, L 86 42.3 % win rate & 2 Promotions.
Port Vale are sitting pretty in 5th place, we are in 16th place.

Great times with Darrell and I'm sure he'll get a warm welcome tonight.
Joe has committed himself to bringing more great times to Rovers and I believe he's doing a very good job.Rovers are becoming a fc where all are singing from the same sheet.Very healthy indeed!
The wheather might make it challenging, but it'll be the same for both teams.I think it's going to be very competitive.Looking forward to it.
Come on Rovers!

I hope that DC gets the welcome he deserves, for everything he did for the club - he really understood the heart and soul of Rovers.
Hopefully he won't be taking 3 points back on the bus with him, but it will be a tough game for us tonight.

I think I must be in the minority then regarding DC, I thought he was quite a petulent individual. Loved it and took all the adulation when things were going well { " X number of promotions in X number of seasons, not bad eh " } but when things got sticky and tactics or selections were questioned of him he would get aggressive and play the victimisation card, not a good trait in my book and that let him down as far as I was concerned, should of gone before he did.

Interesting view......not sure how many share that , think he forced his own way out by getting over involved in the thinking of club politics and taking his eye off the job he was employed to do

Personally speaking, it seemed to me that Darrell was shafted by the owner and not given the backing he was promised. Something that seemed to happen to his successor, who was a completely different character. It's only Barton that has seemed to get everything he wants and he's hardly been a success, whereas Darrell certainly was and Coughlan had started to be. Strange priorities our owner has, but hey, it's his club to do with as he chooses.

An intelligent manager at the Mem again. I'm really looking forward to seeing him stroll across the pitch. Pity it's the wrong team he's leading out.

Darrell Clarke, I remember the Waitrose and the Aldi shopping list he mentioned, very funny.

Who know where we might be had DC who actually achieved something here was given the freedom of the club that Joey seems to enjoy Will look forward to welcoming DC back tonight, but hope he leaves with 0 points obviously

I think what should have happened with DC is that he should have been told to take four weeks off and go home to his family. Re-charge his batteries, and come back refreshed. At the time he was obviously under a lot of pressure, and it was showing. This would have been a much better solution than just firing him, with all the costs involved with that. The coaching staff could have run things for four weeks without him. If it didn't work on his return then they could have still fired him, but I feel the option to give him a break should have been explored.

I absolutely agree with this. Good managers come around all too rarely, so when things deteriorate, why not tell them they're not performing, they're on leave, and their assistant or coach will act up for the time being. Then, if the acting-up coach is a success (Coughlan?) you know you've got your next manager waiting in the wings anyway, and the incumbant knows they have have to come back from leave, show the club more respect, and resume higher performance now well rested. Great.
